If you have the heater turned ON, YES it will help .... Didn't you watch Gary Busey in Cannonball run??

Well, yes that's how a heater core works but it is not enough to make a significant drop in engine temp.

Not at all. Look the coolant lines together and you can run indefinitely like that. Might be a tad chilly depending on your weather, or not.

Just cap them all at the source. You should be able to cap the EGR and smog vac lines at the intake manifold and the car will run. If it still runs like crap your problem is elsewhere. Once you fix that you can reconnect all the vac lines you need after

Smoke test for vacuum leaks and I would do a compression test since you say you are randomly overheating.

I did say that the heater core is an auxiliary heat exchanger
And I will stick with that
No it will not overheat without it and no you do not need it to prevent overheat
I said it helps to prevent overheat (extra coolant capacity and another heat exchanger)
You will be damn glad you have one net time it does overheat
You can turn the heat on high and maybe save the engine

A new core is only 25-75 bucks if you buy it right
Do you have ac and does it work?

Does the compressor turn? The inside guts?
You can probably get the A/C up and running
Real common to be down a bit on freon and then the a/c clutch cycling switch will disable the system
Also real common to be full of freon and the cycling switch just fails and prevents a/c clutch operation
That's the one on the tank or receiver drier or suction accumulator
