My friends 89 LX 5.0 is a dog off the line, then at about 3,000 rpm's it takes off..mods are mass air, c&l maf 76 mm, 24 lb injectors, 65 mm tp, cobra upper and lower intake, e cam, gt40X heads (ported pollished, milled 50/1000ths, 1.6/1.7 rollers...10.5 compression, 14 degrees of timing, car is an aod with 4.10 gears and 2,600 stall converter (just installed), had same condition with a 3,000 stall...all the basics have been checked, could cam be off or dist be off causing this...any suggestions??

Ecam...that says alot about the issue..especially with an AOD..change out the cam for stocker...or better suited cam. You could try degreeing the cam 4 degrees advanced..may brring up the bottom end a bit. Ecam is a turtle before three thousand rpm generally.

It's not the worst. I had an F in my old '92 GT. It was a complete dog until about 3500. However I agree. It's not the best low-end cam on the market by any stretch.

3000 rpm is where the cam starts to make power. I use the Ecam (not for much longer) and if I take off in second gear and hold it to the floor it is dead untill it sweeps through 3000, more like 3200 actually, then it will start to spin tires and race to readline.
When your friend was using the 3000 stall where did it rev to with the brake on?
Maybe he had a "tight" converter ? I would have thought it should have been enough. However I would re degree the cam an try advancing it, as was suggested by DMAN302, this should start the cam making power a little sooner.
Good luck.

Has the car been tuned? Though I agree that the e-cam is not one of thebetter low end cams out there, it should not be a "dog" until 3000 rpm.

That's one he!! of a setup he's got. Shouldn't matter what cam is in there. With those mod's... car should not be a dog.

I loved my F with GT-40Y's in the ole '92

I agree that the Ecam has good top end power, I get the best results shifting at 5800rpm, however if you start off in second gear (stick) you will notice a huge acceleration "boost" at around 3000rpm where the cam starts its power range. This is why it feels like a "dog" before that. This lack of power does not seem to be as noticeable with the standard having a 3.35 first gear, but can seem like forever in a auto with a converter that will not allow the engine up into this power range.

Great... advancing the cam was the trick!! It is always better to work with what you have , than dump money into something blindly!! We have had killer results with the E cam in as far as 6* advanced!! and AOD's !! Have fun....
