I agree with you guys that the Cobra is badass, and with mods, the only thing that will give it a run for its money at high speed is a modded Supra. But you still have to give the STi and Evo credit for doing what they can do, especially on a road course. I have seen STi's and Evo's embarrass cars with more then twice their hp on a road course because they are true "race" cars, not just quarter mile queens.

I'm afraid I'm going to give only only 1/2 points on that statement. They are actually rally cars (Subuaru advertises this fact heavily in the wrx). And Rally courses aren't generally speaking, really race tracks. However if you go to real on road racing. Say american lemans/ speed gt. You don't see the STI and Evo. You see Corvette, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, nissan, mustangs, Vipers, and others. Most all are RWD not AWD.

I'm also a bit on both sides here. I've done alot of both, drag racing and road racing. With all due respect to John Force (and the fact that piloting a top fuel car is light years away from running 12's in your Mustang), drag racing is nothing compared to road racing when it comes to skill sets. However, your "real race car" b.s. is just semantics, the cars you're extolling aren't any faster through the twisties than a Cobra, and the only reason somebody would be fishtailing all over the place in a Cobra would be that the driver was a ham-fisted bozo who ought to stick to drag racing. If I were at a good road course, like Road Atlanta, and an '04 Cobra and Subies and Mitsus were all there, I'd rake in the dough betting you lap times on the Cobra. "Real race car" Can you define that for me????

They are not rally cars in stock trim either! That seems to be what everyone including the owners think until they try to rally race them.

Oh, I'll take that bet, come out here to SoCal. An Evo holds the best time at the road course most people go to out here, one lap in 1 min 31 sec. Not too many RWD guys run that course because it embarasses them, only one guy with a Cobra had enough balls to race it and he finished it in 1 min 54 sec. I dont know whats so hard to understand about it. An Evo corners like its on rails and handles better then most exotics, a turn you can take at 50 mph on a course in an Evo is not one you can take in a Cobra at 50 mph unless you want to skid off the track. The guy in the Evo who got that time was drifting around most of the turns close to 60 mph!! What happens in a RWD? especially a Cobra? You have to slow down and even brake a bit to hit the turns and you cant even give it too much gas coming out of the turn or you will get wheel spin, the back end gets light and you will slow your time even more. You can actually give a car like the Evo MORE gas-going into and especially coming out of-the turn.

I have driven both cars in similar situations and they are both great at different things. Take them both to the drag strip and the Cobra will smoke an Evo. Take em to a road course with twisties and the Evo will slice and dice the Cobra, its a no brainer.

Well, in this situation, the Cobra was probably on a stock suspension, and the Evo, highly, highly modified. There's no way in hell a stock Evo vs. stock Cobra would end up the Evo winning by 20 seconds on a min. and a half track, that is just not a logical bearing on time. If he had the Maximum motorsports total grip package for the cobra, he'd a been lightin' up 1 min 20's.

Exactly, stock for stock there's little difference in the lateral g's on either of those cars. He's comparing apples to oranges, BIG TIME. Bring a Cobra out that's as race-prepped as the Evo that holds that "record", and you'd see a different picture. 20 seconds is an ETERNITY, and there's no way that a stock EVO on stock rubber with less power than a Cobra has some sort of mythical lythium-crystal "real race" chassis that can pull that much of a gap, AWD or not. That's just common sense.... A friggin Ferrari 360 Modena couldn't outpace a Cobra by 20 seconds. These Mitsu's must be friggin F-1 cars with sheetmetal hung around them!

Haven't you heard? The Evo is a "real race car" in some sort of spiritual sense, whatever that entails, forgetting of course that all of the suspension is bolted to a Lancer unibody.

Most of the car magazines have put it against other sports cars in tests and it always comes out in the top 5 in every category.

Funny, that suspension rides and handles 50 times better then the POS on the current Mustangs.

ok, you're starting to make the evo sound like God's gift to the automotive industry...ok, so it's "rally inspired" wtf does that mean? Seems to me it follows the basic geometry, but the mustang, except the cobra are designed to be a smooth riding nice feeling car, not a damn road machine. Besides, what will the bottom end lancers run? and really, you don't see any Evo's on the high end road course circuits do you? it is only corvettes, porsche's, msutangs and those sorts, so apparently they can't keep up somehow.

What makes the evo "special or rally inspired" is the awd drive. Without it (awd)the evo would be just another POS econobox.

AWD = ???

More driveline HP/torque losses?

More fried transaxle components over time?

You don't see EVOs or STis at high-end road courses because what you buy out of the box is basically what you get. Corvettes and Mustangs have tons of room for improvement, in the engine, braking, handling and suspension departments, and the ceiling for what's possible is currently much higher for those cars than any souped-up econobox.

Of course, somebody's eventually going to bring up price or bang for the buck or whatever. And that's fine, if that's your thing. But if bang for the buck is what really mattered, I guess we could make an electric scooter road course for you and your Razor Lancer TIVO ABi Super Rally Edition Scooter.

Only read the initial post, dunno if anyone's covered this but here goes.

Why only a 300hp version the first year? Marketing!

The new car in itself will create hype that will cause it to sell very quickly. Ford knows better than to blow thier whole wad at once...

Once sales slip a little we get "special editions." High horse Cobras, retro replica Mach 1's and Bullits, Anniversary cars, etc.

Those renew interest in the car, and help bring lagging sales back up.

I told you... The check is in the mail box!

Ford call that MARKETING PLANNING??? I hate that!

First year... Base V6 and GT coupe

Second year... Convertible V6 and GT

Third year... I receved the check in the mail box! Mach 1 or Boss model and SVT Shelby!

I start this thread a few week's ago and it's look like everybody are unhappy about the small power of the car... Is it a Mustang power or a Honda? Well, I should not said that... But the true is the S2000 have 2.0L with 240hp and RX8 Mazda 1.3L with 238hp! Well big deal... Ford have 4.6L V8 3V with 300hp??? Hahaha... Is it a joke or a ***ett stang??? Be serious MR. FORD, we are the buyer's here... You are laffing on us!
