Just curious if anyone has used Octane boost in their Mustang....specifically if you have boost or n2o hooked up??? I just had my Procharger install finalized- its getting tuned this weekend- and my install guy said to run Octane Boost as an additional safe-guard against getting a "bad" fill-up of gas? He said it will help prevent blowing anything up- won't guarantee it of course, but said Octane boost is just a nice safety tool to use?

Anyone run it- and have a recommendation for or against it??? Sorry for the newb question- I just have never heard of it before yesterday??? :bang:

This is one of the products I found at Autozone???

I wouldn't use octane boost all the time but if you notice any pinging after you fuel up, it would be a good idea to use it, or if your going to the track and your concerned about detonation. Here's a write up on the 104:

Some octane boosters work better than others so do some research. If you find your getting detonation even with higher octane fuel, it would be wise to back down the timing abit.

The SCT tune in my 02 GT pings when hot even with 94 Sunoco. I've found that only the NOS-brand octane boost:

seems to stop it. I could back the timing off a few degrees but I'm okay with the boost too. I never had any luck with the STP or 104 stuff...

most octane boost is a waste of money as they barely raise octane levels. There are a few tho that can actually make a difference. i don't remember which. adding non-leaded race gas will produce better results. but raises the octane level won't make a difference if you don't have pinging.

There was a good thread on this topic probably about 2 months ago on this forum, sorry no link. The basics were that some work and some don't. You should only use it if you are racing and don't have access to race fuel, or you are pinging and can't retune your car. The stuff that works is the octane booster for racing or off-road use only. You can buy it from your local auto stores, but make sure you buy the stuff that says on the package, for off-road use only. Those are the ones that actually help. I wouldn't count on it for performance, but that is just my opinion.

I have used it a couple of times b/c my car was pinging and I needed to use it until I could adjust my timing. I don't know the long term effects of it after continous use. If you are blown, than I would definitely carry some around in case you get bad gas or can't get the octane you need.

i use the NOS brand octane boost when i go to the track for a day of racing. I agree that it is a nice safety tool for detonation. I only run the juice on the track and have had no detonation problems....... probably also because 6 degrees of timing comes out when the juice comes on. damn i love my digital 6 MSD ignition.

fools gold.

octane boosters, while they SAY they raise the octane level one point, really only raise it a tenth of a point(.1).

and even if they did raise the octane level 1 point, one point is not gonna make or break predetonation.

just run better gas. on my old car(97 eclipse gst, nicely modded) i would only be able to run 15* of timing on 91 octane california pisswater. i found a station that sold 100 octane(for i nice price, might i add), with a full tank of 100 i was able to run 20* of timing and lean out the fuel curves. though i usually ran half a tank of 91 and half a tank of 100 so it evened out to around 95ish, and i was able to see 17* of timing and good fuel curves. then again, one day for ****s and giggles, i ran 116 race gas from the track, saw 24* of timing with fuel curves pretty leaned out, and 0 knock/predetonation. for that 100$ tank of gas, that car was ****ing fast, for a week(till it sucked all that gas up).

With Sunoco 94, the best gas I can get around here without a trip to the airport, my 02 will ping under hard acceleration with the tune I have right now. With the NOS street formula stuff, it doesn't ping.

Ya the NOS stuff is the best I've found, at least around here anyway.

Not true, well not entirely true. Yes, some of the boosters don't do much for you especially the cheap ones that are for street use. I have found that the ones for "off-road use only" do work, but personally I have only used it for emergencies, i.e. couldn't get 93 octane or car was pinging and I couldn't change the timing immediately.
