In layman's terms, there is a lot of wasted energy that is lost in the exhaust of a typical internal combustion engine. A turbocharger is designed to take advantage of that and turn it into usable power. A supercharger just leeches power from the crankshaft that could otherwise be used to turn the rear wheels. That's why turbo cars tend to make more power per psi boost than supercharged cars do. There a lots of examples of this effect out there, with lots of magazine tests and guys like NoSlo5.0 proving it in the real world. Both methods have their merits, but no power adder beats out a turbo in terms of sheer power-per-boost efficiency.

Perhaps my method of explanation was unclear. It's not to say that any supercharger was more efficient than a turbo in converting energy (ehxaust or crank) into boost. Turbos are def the most efficient by way of loss vs. gain, no doubt.
