I know there was just a big thread on "top speed" with these gears,,DONT CARE,,,what I wanna know is what rpm are you doing on the highway at 60,,,70,,,and 80mph?? Oh yeah,I have an aod,but if you have a 5spd with 430's,more power to you!!And how is your gas mileage?

60 mph is ~2100 rpms. 70 mph i'm taching ~2450 rpms. 80 mph is ~2800 rpms. of course, right now i run 275-60-15's in the back, which are 28" tall. i'm thinking of changing to a slightly smaller tire sometime though because they do rub. it still wouldn't be too bad on the highway with a smaller tire, although i don't drive the car as much as i used to. i want to keep the car under 5000 miles per year because of emissions. 4.30 gear is definatly not for everyone though.

No there not for everyone,,,I like them because they keep me honst on the highway.I have 410's rite now,Ive noticed myself getting a little higher every month on the tach.Im on rt. 80 every morning at 430 in the morning (yes the rt 80 that runs coast to coast) I know the spots where the police are so for the rest of my hour long ride I find myself doing 3 grand. My speedo is off because of my 410's,but its between 85-95.Thats too fast,Im 37,I dont need a speeding ticket. But with 430's,things would be alot slower. But Im waiting till I get a new cam.

Sounds like you just need cruise control, not a set of gears.

willys - if you're thinking about changing from the 4.10's in your sig, a change to 4.30's is only a 5% change in engine speed. 3000 rpm now would only be 3150 rpm with the 4.30's. You can achieve the same thing a lot less expensively by running a slightly (5%) shorter rear tire.

Hmm...my 373's tach at 2000 at 60mph...I think your tach is off...mine is accurate :) evne besides the tires being different and the final drive ratio is like .01 off between AOD's and T5's...so it isn't that I currently have a 5spd...

5 spd - depends also on the 5th gear ratio in the T-5; some have .675, some have .625.

All 86-93 5.0 Mustang factory installed T5's have a .67 5th gear. Real early T5's I think had the .62 5th gear. Like in late '83 or '84 whenthe T5 switch occured.

All AOD's have a .68 4th gear.
The AODE-W/4R70W has a .70 4th gear.

I have a 95 t-5 (could be different) and I sit at 2000rpm...

Yeah that is what I was thinking about the year models...they were all the same for the newest model fox platform (87-93)...in which I was referring to...

I had 4:10 in my car with the C4 and 26" inch tire it would do 65-70mph at like 27-2800rpm.I got 3:73 now and it alittle better 24-2500rpm at 65-70mph.I will probabley never drive on the highway again as that was just to break in the new motor.

Well...
I don't have 4.30's, but gave them much consideration.
4.30's would have put me enough over my usefull power curve in the 1/4 for the speeds I'm targeting that I decided against them.
Matter of fact, it would have put me on the limiter thru the traps, and, I didn't want to go the twEECer route for $$$ reasons.
If you plan on trapping below 112-114 on a 26" tire, you'll want a combination that has shift point up handy to 6000.
You'll want to make sure your combo will breath there.
My combo is going to want to be shifted 5600-5800, so, I'll want a trap rpm of ~6000 and I'm hopeing that equates to ~112 aveerage thru the traps (60' timed speed calc.) All that equals 4.10's for me.

Anyways... just trying to point out there is lots to think about other than just freeway rpm.

As for gas mileage, the swap from 3.73 to 4.10 was a definate mpg killer. Add 200rpm to the equation I cannot imagine it getting better at that point. I was getting 26mpg with 3.73's, I'd be suprised (never calc'd it, but, as an estimate) if I got over 22 with 4.10's, and I'd guess 20mpg would be the target if I were to add a couple hundred rpm to the equation. Anyways, I'd "guess" a drop of 2mpg from 4.10's to 4.30's.

If you 1/8th rather then 1/4, you may want to look at 4.56's, or, even 4.88's.
Although, that'd certianly be more than 'I'd' want for a driver.

Good luck making your decision Willys.
I know I spent much time pondering it myself.

Anyone who has bought a new world class from Ford Racing also has a .625 fifth, and a 2.95 first instead of the 3.35. That's what's in mine.

Mike - I'm surprised at the gas mileage change on yours. I did a bunch of experiments with my wife's car/trip computer checking gas mileage at 60/65/70 mph in 4th gear vs. 5th gear. In her car that's like the difference between 3.55's and 4.10's in a Stang. It was about 5% difference at 60, 7% at 65 mph and 10% at 70 mph (dropped from 40mpg to 36). 'Course, her car's a bit more aerodynamic than the Stang, but it is interesting what a big hit you took with 4.10's.

No Im getting the 430's for the acceleration!! Slowing me down on the parkway is just a bonus!!! Im keeping my 245 or 255/55/16' Nittos. They would be way to muchIMO(430's),,for the stock cam.I dont usually cruise at 3 grand, only on the way to work.Normally Im at 2500,,thats 72mph :nice:
