OT: Air Compressor? Thinking about buying one....

How many of you have one of these at home? Im thinking about buying one from Sears. One of those 33 gallon 1.5 hp or something for working on my car and for my h/c/i upgrade over the winter. They have a couple on sale for $199, $299, $399.

I dont know much and i wasn't sure if you needed a certain size for it to be useful or strong. Or if the smaller tanks need to "re-compress" often making its useful ness low.

Are craftsman compressors oiled?

Anyway, give me your opinions.

Wow, you didn't have one? I could never live without one! Get a good sized one, don't worry about spending the few extra bucks for a nice one because it will be worth it in the long run.

Well im 19 so i dont have a lot of money to get a really expensive one and i am trying to save money for the h/c/i parts.

Im just trying to see if these size of units are worth it. What other things do i have to buy to use it?

They have a vertical and horizontal. Which do you guys recommend? Also, this one is oiled right? The guys at the corral said the oil free ones suck

I sell a 27gallon Coleman upright at Pep Boy's for $199. They sold like crazy and not a single person has complained about it. If I had the cash, I would get it in a heartbeat!

That one you posted looks good for general shop stuff...plus you get the tools with it to boot, saves a few bucks right there...Sure its gonna run alot, but use it, then shut it down..I'd rather have that than nothing...Having is air is a must....

So my next question is about power outlets. Are all household outlets 120v/60Hz AC? Im not sure so please help me out.

Having air makes pull heads and pullies much easier with the big air rachet.

First, I wouldn't buy anything from Pep Boys. Atleast buy something with a warrantee.

Secondly, a 33 gallon tank and only 1.5 horsepower won't do much. I'd look for something in the 5 - 6.5 horsepower range. We've got a 55 gallon Snap-On tank with a 8 HP compressor. It only takes about 30 seconds to go from 70 to 120 PSI.

Air is a must, especially after you've busted a few knuckles up.

Its a 6hp motor, i dont know why i was thinking 1.5.

Well the one I have at home is small but still does the job with the impact wrench. The oil free ones will be louder so if pissing off your neighbors isnt a problem dont worry so much about that. Besides that I dont know why oil free ones suck Mine is loud and small but is good enough for my needs. I think its only a 3hp or something? I can check tonight. it takes a while to fill (2-3 minutes) up but will hold air for a long time. Definitely something every garage needs.

Home Depot has a Husky Compressor with an impact / ratchet / spray guns / die grinder / air chisel / and sockets and a few other things for $299. Its a 5.5 32 gallon compressor.

THe husky piece has a die grinder but pushes less cfm at 90psi.

Both are the same price, i guess tools for 1 more cfm?

Chit to Chit...that Husky ones looks purdy decent too....I got mine at Home Depot too...180 PSI....

Most smaller ones are for the home owner and plug right in to household current....thats 120V, so your cool there...Only the bigger ones use 220Amp.
