Hey guys, I've been fighting this issue of this "space ship" noise coming from the engine bay. I told myself over and over again that it was the UPR Smog Delete making the noise, it never crossed my mind it could be the alt. While I was putting the A/C back on the car, I had the belt off so I spun both by hand. The smog delete made no noise at all and the alt "squeaked" when I turned it by hand. The alt is a PA Performance unit, I'm guessing it's got a bad bearing in it or something. Should I just pull it off and take it to an alternator shop and let them go through it or should I send an e-mail to PA Performance about it? My exhaust is pretty quiet and the noise can be heard over the exhaust with the hood closed, etc. Opinions please.:flag:

Been there and done that. If you have it bench tested, if it's a bearing, it'll whine when a hard load is put on it.

I'd have it dealt with before it gets worse (and I'd just let PA-P take care of it. That also protects the unit so it cannot be said that unauthorized work was done on the alt).

That said, I have a 3G that has a noisy bearing and it seems to be doing ok. It bothers me and I know it will only get noisier.

Good luck brah!

I might need to get a stethoscope to be sure before I go through all the trouble. The smog delete doesn't make any noise and the alternator does turning it by hand. The alt shouldn't "squeak" at a certain spot when spinning it by hand should it?

No it should not squeak at all and I would follow the advise given above.. make sure the noise is coming from your alt then take it up with PA - P because they can wipe there hands clean of it totally if it's opened up by your or anybody else besides them.

good luck
