Hey guys, I've been fighting this issue of this "space ship" noise coming from the engine bay. I told myself over and over again that it was the UPR Smog Delete making the noise, it never crossed my mind it could be the alt. While I was putting the A/C back on the car, I had the belt off so I spun both by hand. The smog delete made no noise at all and the alt "squeaked" when I turned it by hand. The alt is a PA Performance unit, I'm guessing it's got a bad bearing in it or something. Should I just pull it off and take it to an alternator shop and let them go through it or should I send an e-mail to PA Performance about it? My exhaust is pretty quiet and the noise can be heard over the exhaust with the hood closed, etc. Opinions please.

Been there and done that. If you have it bench tested, if it's a bearing, it'll whine when a hard load is put on it.

I'd have it dealt with before it gets worse (and I'd just let PA-P take care of it. That also protects the unit so it cannot be said that unauthorized work was done on the alt).

That said, I have a 3G that has a noisy bearing and it seems to be doing ok. It bothers me and I know it will only get noisier.

Good luck brah!

I might need to get a stethoscope to be sure before I go through all the trouble. The smog delete doesn't make any noise and the alternator does turning it by hand. The alt shouldn't "squeak" at a certain spot when spinning it by hand should it?

No it should not squeak at all and I would follow the advise given above.. make sure the noise is coming from your alt then take it up with PA - P because they can wipe there hands clean of it totally if it's opened up by your or anybody else besides them.

good luck
