Unless you cleaned something that was really really nasty, like with chemicals on it, i wouldn't worry about it, but i wouldn't throw a greasy nasty valve cover in the same dishwasher that i clean my dishes on. I think what he meant above was he had something media or sand blasted and dishwashed it to make sure all the media was removed....which shouldn't hurt anything since it would be pretty clean after getting blasted.
I will say though, painting is really hit and miss. I've painted a whole lot of things and sometimes it turns out great, sometimes not so great. My buddy once masked off his engine bay and painted his whole engine and intake and different parts piece by piece and it turned out surprisingly good looking and lasted a long time. Then i painted some valve covers the RIGHT way, primer and wet sanded and all that, and they chipped and looked horrible a few months later.
My latest paint job was my Merkur valve cover which i think is going to hold up really nice except for scratches and chips, but when you spray can something, that's to be expected. I would really like to get a nice powder coat kit and a thrift store oven and go that route.
