I have a bone-stock 1987 5.0 LX Coupe that I am looking into possibly installing one of the Paxton 1220SL superchargers on. I am not looking for high boost so I thought this supercharger would be a good bet. Here are my questions...

1) Since it has an FMU included, is it necessary to upgrade the injectors or upgrade the fuel pump?

2) Is this kit a pretty much bolt-on and go kit?

Thanks for any and all help!

IMO go with injectors and a pump , and have a custom tune made.

FMU's can fubar your engine if the f up.

I think your plan is a good plan

Happy boosting

Ok, I guess I could always go with the larger injectors and a larger pump in the near future as well. What about installing the kit ust the way it is, i.e. using the FMU? Is it pretty much a bolt on kit?

Thanks!

1220 sl

Just installed one in my 1990. Upgrade the fp is a must, I went with a 255 walbro in tank. I stayed with the FMU and it seems to be working fine. Install was pretty straight forward, just take your time. I would also recommend a bypass and an ignition retard, which do not come with the kit. Looking back, the Vortech V3 may be the better deal because you get more boost and the bypass/retard are included.

I bought from superchargers online. They had the lowest price that I could find and the service was excellent.

Superchargers online told me that I wouldn't need a bypass if I am just running the "stock" 5 - 6 pound boost that the 1220SL makes...

What do you have your timing set at right now?

1220sl

yep bypass not required or the ignition retard. I put on the bypass to help drivability issues and the retard to guard against detonation. My timing is 14* with the sc but my engine is a gt40 crate and fairly modified. I feel OK with 14 because the retard is taking out advance under boost.

One other thing, I'm not sure w speed density but a dyno tune is a must to get the most out of a supercharged MAF car.

Paxton's are junk... I had one and it spent more time in the UPS truck going to California and back than it did on my car.

Anybody else have any input on this supercharger?

Mike,

Where did you get your 3.33 supercharger pully from?

You'll love it.
You can get the 3.33 pulley from superchargersonline.com

Must have been the older model balldrive unit.

wow

I have a paxton 1220SL on my 331. Paxton does not make junk

I upgraded to 42lb injectors got a tune and ditched the fmu. If you are running a stock car then you'll be fine with it. I would recommend upgrading to a 255lph pump as a must. Under a $100 bucks for a Walboro and easy to change out.

You need a bypass unless you feel like hurting the blower.

I just had my final tune done today. The car with an Anderson powerpipe is only seeing 6lbs at WOT. It obliterates my 275/60 tires half way through third gear.

Time for a pulley!

Got the pulley from supercharges online, also usually available on ebay. FYI I believe that the new Paxton and Vortech pulleys are interchangeable.

Cobra912,

Do you have a mass-air or speed density engine? I was told since I have a speed density engine that I have to have a bypass valve kit to hook up to the MAP sensor so it will not see boost or something like that. Also, this is probably a dumb question but is the Anderson PowerPipe only for mass-air engines or will it work on my speed density as well?

I converted my speed density to mass air. So in regards to your question I'm not sure. The powerpipe I'm sure could be used with a speed density system.

Sorry I can't really answer your questions.

I heard people say over abnd over again - convert your car. But I was very hesitant as it seemed very involved. But if you are putting a blower on I would recommend doing the upgrade. All you need is a wiring harness (you can buy a kit) , a mass air meter and a mass air computer like a A9L, A9P, A9S etc

Just saw a great deal on one of the Vortech V3 kits. It is a self-lubricated supercharger as well. Based on the fact that I would be adding this to my 1987 non-mass air Mustang, which would you recommend and why?

Vortech V3

or

Paxton 1220SL

Thanks for any and all responses

I just gave my buddy a ride in my car tonight. Saw 7 lbs of boost on highway at WOT with my 331/ Paxton 1220SL.

NOOOO traction through 1-2 and half way through third. All he could say was "holy S!!!"
