After finally getting this thing put bak together and runiing good enough to drive, I took the car for a quick spin yesterday. Punch it in third gear ro make sure the boost gauge was working and to see how much boost i was making... ALl of a sudden i hear a pop... And smoke starts coming in through the firewall.. I wa like oh Cr@p, what now... Car seemes to run ok, so i limped her back home and what had happened was that the pcv valve had popped right out of the intake manifold, along with the mesh filter that stays inside... ANybody have any idea why this happened? I know why it happened, too much pressure building up in crankcase, but why???

THanks,

It's not being ventilating properly. Some also have problems with the dip stick doing the same thing. To solve this a breather were the oil filler cap goes will help ventilate better.

I'm NA but after just about every 1/4 pass, mine pops out too. I put a little bit of black electrical tape around mine so it seats in the hole a little tighter. I run a breather too. Make sure you have it seated FULLY in there too, I can't believe youpopped the mesh filter out too... mine is hard to get out when I'm trying to remove it.

The compression rings may not be doing their job (preventing blowby). Hopefully this isn't your problem though.

Thanks for the info guys... If i put a breather on the oil fill i get crazy smoke coming out of it... Especially when i get on it a little... Is this normal? When the pcv popped out i was getting about 10 lbs of boost. Also the car sat for two years without heads or intake; just the block before i bought it. I have only driven it about 20 miles since we finished rebuilding the top end. Could it be that the rings need to reseat themselves? Or do i have some serious problems? Also, i am wondering if i have something not hookep up correctly with the vacuum system. Does anyone have a daigram for the vacuum system?

Thanks again...

Red... you may VERY WELL have a serious problem on your hand. How did the cylinder bores look when you put the motor back together? Were they rusted? Did the motor turn freely or was it froze up? You have an aweful lot of blowby there my friend, and that is a sign of week rings. I think you better seriously start thinking about getting it re-ringed AT A MINIMUM.

Im with Killer. If you have smoke coming out the breather then you have a problem. Most likely the rings are gone.

I'm not running a breather(although maybe I should). I just have a T connection coming from the pcv and one going to the fill neck like normal, and one going to my air filter. I don't have any problems with the dipstick or pcv poping out.

I just started having a problem with the dipstick popping out after switching to the performer rpm II. Turns out that the line coming from the oil fill to the air box was crimped by the TB. I'm gonna try to move that line and see if that helps. But yea, if you have smoke coming out of the breather then it sounds like you have bad blowby. Like wveryone said were the rings rusted or anything. Those things are sensitive, you cant just leave the shortblock like that for two years unprotected from the elements. Sorry to say but like everyone else said, that may be your problem. Did you ever try running the car w/o boost? And also, smoke from your tail pipes woud be a sure sign of a ring problem. But yea, did the car do this same thing w/o boost, that info could help us a lot.

Would a compression test tell you if the rings were bad in this case? I don't know, so I am just throwing that out there.

bad compression test results...

OK, first off, i threw a rocker last week. At that time i did a compression test on a couple of cylinders on the driver side and was getting around 90psi. Did a complete compression test now after retightening all the rockers and the same side is getting horrible compression. Passenger side is fine all up around 100psi. Could we have tightened the rockers too much and the valves aren't closing? The car has been runniong strong not like it would if there was no compression. Anyone got any ideas??

Thanks again for all your input...

That number is really low. Were all of the numbers really close together??

There is a thread on here about the proper way to adjust rockers. Do a search.

Good luck man. I hope it's just a head gasket and not a piston ring problem (doubtful though).
