How did your shop check for coil bind? If they did it with a feeler gauge without the motor fully warmed and running then they didn't have the lifter pumped up and it will of course skew the measurements. Stock lift on the stock camshaft is .462" ...

Maybe on non-PI heads but PI cams are .510 and .530 intake and exhaust, respectively.

Coil bind has nothing to do with duration or a more agressive opening ramp.

No, but valve control when you have steep ramps has everything to do with the springs. For more agressive ramps, maintaining valve control requires a spring upgrade. It's why, I believe, that Comp says a spring upgrade is merely "recommended" for the Stg 1 and 2 (262 & 270) cams but "required" for the Stg 3 (278) cams even though they have the same gross lift.

BTW, Sean Hyland does NOT use the stock springs on a .550" lift camshaft, he knows they will bind. You guys really need to quit going by what you read on these websites because aftermarket and performance shops hire a webmaster to design their sites. 99% of the webmasters that put together these sites don't know a muffler from a tire.

No offense, but so far you haven't really provided much assistance either. You've been arguing till the cows come home about installed heights and springs and have quoted incorrect numbers for PI valve lifts.

It's not that I don't appreciate the effort, but, really, I don't want to argue incorrect points about installed heights and coil bind. COramprat has 50K miles on stock springs and 262AH cams. That's helped me more than all this nonsensical bickering with you.

Mike...read my post above yours...sorry for the misinfo. I assumed incorrectly the valve lift for the AH's were the same. Looks as if they are not. The duration is a little different also.

Thanks for the clarification.

:/

I'm guessing "Orange" also has 262Hs and not AHs in his.

Time for more research.

Sorry about that...Yes...his is non PI also since he lists a PI Intake as a mod.

I really wish we had a separate tech section for non PI and PI. There are a number of differences in mods and specs on these things.

The PI cams have a overall lift of .462 not the .510 that is grossly misrepresented all across the internet.

If I haven't provided any useful technical assitance in this thread then you haven't been reading my posts. Comprat has a different camshaft with a different lift. This is what happens when people like you don't pay attention and simultaneously kick a gift horse in the mouth.

Here is some assistance..... use an aftermarket spring.

I agree, that would really be a great idea. It would help eliminate a lot of confusion.

Hmm. What's your source? My 2002 Ford Workshop Manual (Helm) lists the theoretical valve lift at zero-lash to be 0.510" on the intake and 0.540" on the exhaust.

Are you sure you're not thinking of NPI cams that had something like 0.466" lift on the intake and exhaust valves?

If I haven't provided any useful technical assitance in this thread then you haven't been reading my posts.

Sorry, what you've provided has been of virtually no value to me. For example, I know what installed height is while you, apparently, were confused. You said

"The installed height of that spring is .026" higher than the stock spring. That means at .550" lift on the aftermarket spring you will actually have .026" more retainer to oil seal clearance than the stock setup."

I was rather polite in the follow-up post about the height being the same if all that's changed is the spring but you continued on with

"The installed height has everything to do with the spring. It is the actual measurement of the distance between the bottom of the valve spring retainer to the spring pocket when the valve is seated. It is not a recommendation by any means. It's the actual height as measured with a stock length valve and stock valve seat."

Stock valve...stock seat. IH does not change between springs. Whatever dude. I know you said you had me confused with someone else but...

Comprat has a different camshaft with a different lift. This is what happens when people like you don't pay attention and simultaneously kick a gift horse in the mouth.

People like me start a thread with a very clear title:

"PI 2V: OEM springs with Comp 262AHs?"

I specify it's a PI engine and I want to use original springs with 262AH cams. Right there in the subject. How much clearer am I supposed to be?

Do you want me to read others' minds when they say "Yep. I did it and it's great" and know that they're mistaken or lying? Am I somehow wrong for reading their replies and taking them at their word? Give me a break.

Look, COramprat explained the mix-up and even apologized. I thanked him for the clarification and will simply move on to do more research.

Here is some assistance..... use an aftermarket spring.

I probably will, eventually. Depends on what my research shows.

My sources are actual measurements done by hand with a dial type spring height micrometer graduated in .0001" (ten thounsadths of an inch), not what I read on the internet or in a Helm manual.

Good luck, it sounds like you need it.
