when i took the bolts out the A-arm came down at an angle and wedged itself inside the k-member, so i had the bright idea of putting the jack about an inch under the spring and i hit the arm with a hammer, when the a-arm hit the jack, the handle flew back and cracked me in the head, it felt like someone ran up and hit me with a baseball bat. Sounded that way too.
probly one of the dumbest things i ever did working on a car, but i didnt have much of a choice to get the spring out, the car had no motor, so everytime i tried to jack it up, the whole car would raise and i was getting nowhere. Im still alive and ive got the lump to prove it.
Probably a different story when you've got some weight on the front end, then. Many, many folks been doing it with a jack for years without issues. The hose clamp thing just sounds dangerous as all hell to me - sort of like using a cigarette lighter to ignite a really short fuse on an M-80.
