Neat stuff Mike! I love projects like this.

I remember your threads about the high-RPM miss - I hope this takes care of it.

Quick update, got all the coils wired in and tested. Had to add $100 for some spark plug wires. I'm hoping they'll be here tomorrow so I can try to fire it up.

One more thing, it looks like the factory tach will not work with this setup. Sooo, looks like I need a new tach...Any recommendations? Something inexpensive would be nice

Got it fired up tonight! The only issue I had was that I left the vac line off the brake booster...Couldn't figure out why it was idling fast, until I backed out of the garage and hit the brakes.

I got lucky on installing the EPM, the timing wasn't off far. I got it started after about three tries, and it was sitting at about 5*. Two sparks per revolution make setting the timing incredibly easy. It looks like the balancer isn't even moving.

I only drove it around the block once, but it's definitely a nice improvement. Throttle response feels better, and it's much smoother. It doesn't shake the car at idle like it used to, but my idle wasn't steady for some reason...need to work on that this weekend...I don't know if it fixed my high rpm problem yet, I only took it up to 5300. It's kinda scary running with no tach...

Here's some pics of the finished product. One of these days I'll try to clean up the wiring.

Damn.. I forgot about the factory tach not working.... Thats a deal breaker for me.. I don't want an ugly ass aftermarket tach in my car, nor do I want a dead gauge on the dash....

I wonder if it's possible to drive the factory tach with some wiring skills

I'm gonna try to rig it up this weekend. I found a way to make an autometer gauge work by wiring a resistor between the power and data wire to the tach, and you have to set it to 4 cyl mode. You need to set the tach info in the AEM so it knows every 3rd tooth fires a cylinder, 24 teeth = 8 cyl. Since you obviously can't set the factory tach to 4 cyl mode, I'm wondering if it will work by settings the AEM tach info to 6 teeth, which would = 4 cyl....

I'll probably end up with one of those big dumb 5" tachs.

I'm curious how this works out... I might do some research on how the factory tach works compared to an autometer and figure out a way..

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.. But I've spent entirely too much money on my interior to throw a monster tach in it..

I could possibly do a digital 2-1/16" one instead...

Dunno if this thread will help, sounds like they are having the same problems you are. Hope it helps, I'm a bit light on distributorless ignition systems.

That is sweet, I've never seen such a thing. I always thought it would be sweet to completely do away with the factory ECU and harness and go aftermarket. The distributor/sensor replacement is TOO cool

would this be a beneficial mod to someone like me that has a stock engine now, but has plans to put an 408w stroker in down the road? like maybe i could get it setup and the bugs worked out before my new engine goes in? or should i just wait til after the motor is in? i see the benefits with this new setup and i kinda wanna get the stuff bought before prices start going up.

thanks
chad

I don't think it would be worth it on a stock mustang. Yes it would run smoother and possibly get better mpg, but it's a lot of work and money to put into a stock mustang. Remember you need a stand-alone ECU like the AEM, which is $1600+ new, $800+ used. I would do this at the same time as the 408 install, or get it running with the stock ignition then do the swap.

Also, the distributor/EPM is different for the 5.0 and 5.8.

Somebody on my local forum suggested this, Universal Tachometer Signal Interface

It should work since you can tell it that it's a 8 cyl tach on a 4 cyl engine.
