I have a 95 GT and for the past couple months i have been trying to find why its pinging. And since i cant, i figured id see if others had the problem i am. First ill tell you thing things i have changed or tested on the car.

MSD Wires
NGK Plugs
MSD Cap And Rotor
Aeromotive Fuel Regulator
255lph Fuel Pump
Fuel pressure is set a touch high at 42 right now.
Timing Is set to 10*.. so unless it jumped a tooth....
Vacuum is right around 17-18 if i remember right. And Im in Yuba city, CA.. so i think pretty close to sea level.

And cleaned every sensor and valve from the intake to the mass air meter.

The car will drive great, accelerate hard and drive like a beast. Then 10sec later, when i get on it, will ping like crazy. There is just no telling when it will do it.
My chilton says there is only a couple things left that can cause pinging
Timing advance malfunction, or EGR. But i thought id ask since you guys have had 94-95's longer then me. PLEASE HELP... THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Well, this may sound dumb, but have you checked your base timing, It should be set at 10* with the spout connector out.

Also, If base timing appears to be correct check your harmonic balancer to see if its spun, reach around it and see if you can feel any rubber coming out the sides of it where it attaches to the other half of the balancer. Even if you dont theres still a chance it could of spun a little on you. Not sure how to verify this, maybe someone else can chime in.

What's the mileage on your car? It might be a good idea to run a can of Seafoam through the engine. It'll clean out any carbon and oil deposits that would otherwise increase your chances of pre-ignition. It certainly couldn't hurt.

If that doesn't work, I'd look into replacing the EGR valve.

How many threads do you need to start on this topic? There's two in Tech and one here. One thread would be sufficient.

Some people only look in one forum. ANd since this has been a problem for 2 months, i need wide spread coverage and answers. I ran seafoam through it just a short time ago. ANd i pulled the EGR, throttle body and all sensors out and cleaned everything. there was hardly any carbon even in the EGR. Im going to try and test it in a few min.

The problem is, you didn't even give much time to answer any of them either. It's not uncommon for several hours to go by before getting an answer, especially on a Sunday morning. And you did get an answer within 20 minutes in one of the 4 you posted (also discovered one in the tuning forum). A search also found 200 threads with the word ping in them, which means there are more, but that's the forum limit for a return on the search.

What codes did you retrieve?

Good luck.

You pulled the spout connector out when you set the timing right?

Sounds like you've tried everything. Cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the distrib cap, changed plugs, set the timing back to 10 WITH the spout connector out. The car is still acting like the timing is way too advanced so back it down some more. Set it to 8 and see what you get. You're running high octane gas, right? Definitely check that harmonic balancer.

this might also sound REALLY dumb... but ur sayin when u get on it, u hear pinging... have u checked underneath the car? my car was pinging a little, but the sounded was amplified especially when i drove in the high speed lane near the wall... my exhaust was loose and rattling back and fourth, i took it as pingin at first lol.. so double check that... just my .02

My car was plagued with pinging. I did all the above remedies, plus replace the IAT/ECT sensors, etc.

The only cure was to run 91 octane, or, when I got my Tweecer, richen the fuel tables some.

When I did my h/c/i that cured it. I am at 14* timing w/ zero pinging. There was a layer of carbon on the pistons and cc's that a billion cans of sea foam would never touch. I had to take a wire brush wheel on the end of my drill for HOURS to get it all off.

I do believe the previous owners were too nice to the car, never really getting on it, which lead to the carbon situation IMO.

OK.. Ill try and answer all of these.I did have the spout out when i did the timing. I have put 91 octane in.. didnt help. I have put seafoam through it, didnt get much smoke though. And well.. it has about 90,000 on it. Not saying the car is perfect, but its in good shape. I unhooked the EGR...( removed vacuum and pluged both sides). Seems to kinda have helped. But im ganna give it a couple more days to find out. THanks to those that chimed in. And no codes.

Are you losing any coolant over time? You could have a minor head gasket leak, or minor crack in your cyl wall, letting coolant into the combustion chamber under hard acceleration. I had a similar issue with an old car, the #7 cyl wall had a VERY small stress fracture, but under hard acceleration it was letting coolant into the combustion chamber and pinging extremely heavily.

An idea atleast.

I have unhooked the EGR, (disconnecting and pluged the vacuum) that worked at first, then started pinging again. So i backed the timing off down to either 6 or 8.. so hard to see on the 95. And its not pinging now, but its just a dog, feels heavy on acceleration. So unless its something mechanical. i dont know. Im pulling the trani off in a couple weeks to look inside there, see if something is loose and rattleing. Maybe it just sounds like detonation. And i can only imagine since when i was looking under the car, there were only 2 bolts holding the trani to the bell housing. SPECIAL THANKS TO WHOEVER HAD IT APART LAST!
