Hey guys, I am new to StangNet and was hoping you guys could help me out with my problem.

Recently I had to replace my postive battery cable as the terminal had become quite corroded and the existing cable was too short (must have been cut by previous owners before). Anyways, when I discovered how corroded the terminal had become, I replaced it, as a fix so I could take it in to get the cables completely replaced. After I did this, I started getting a check engine light coming on upon startup, and the engine was surging quite bad. As soon as I gave it some gas the RPM would bottom out and the car would stall.

Since this I have had the cables replaced, and had them check for codes. They came up with a 998 code, Hard Fault. They checked my MAF sensor as the potential problem, and it was getting only 0.1V. They didn't have the equipment to further check it so I am now stuck as to what to do (I live in a suburb of the big city and the next best place to take it is in the city). I also had the MAF sensor replaced about a year and a half ago (albeit it was a refurbished unit). Can someone help me out as to what the problem might be, and how to go about fixing it.

Thanks in advance.

Did you replace the whole starter/battery wire assy.? There is O2 sensor wires with it. Perhaps there is an issue with the plug connecting the upper engine harness to the lower engine harness (AKA the starter/battery/O2 harness). I had an issue with that connector shorting out due to moisure (actually coolant) in it. I wasn't getting a 998, but the circuit 'SIGNAL RETURN' is in there and is also at the MAF...

No, I just had the postive battery cable replaced. I don't think it has to do with the cable being replaced, as I started having this problem before the cable was replaced. I took out the MAF sensor, the thing still looks brand new. I don't think it is the sensor that is bad, but maybe the electrical to the sensor. The last time when I replaced the MAF I was not having the same problem I am now, the car was completely driveable, but would stutter every now and then when the gas was applied. Now it seems like there is something electrical wrong, when I hit the gas the RPM's bottom out, my battery gauge goes balistic, and the battery light comes on.

The MAF sensor gets 5V from the computer. Check the IAT the ECT for the same 5V. If you don't have it, you either have a wiring problem from the eec to the sensor, or your computer is shot.
