kentwood,La
ok guys,as most of you know i did a pi head/cam/intake swap on my 98 gt!
1st thing i notice when i crank it up is that it sounds alot different.it has a deeper tone now.well the power is definitely there.so i decide to take it to the track to see what happens.
1st run,a 14.56.so i'm pretty pissed at this moment.the best i netted with 5 runs was a 14.36 at 96mph.i was running that before the swap so i was really mad.well i decide that i would run again and instead of shifting at 6,000rpm,i would try 5,300rpm.1st thing i noticed is it felt stronger when i shifted at 5,300rpm.i ran a 14.32 at 97 mph.so i figure i would try shifting at 5,000rpm.
this last ran gave me a 14.21 at 98mph.all the runs were with 2.1 60ft times.
i was told that after the head swap it would pull all the way to 6,000rpm.
well mine doesn't.is this all because i need a tune?
i am pretty ticked off that i spent all this money and time to do the swap, and i'm still runnin around the same time that i did.
i'm gonna talk to a few guys around and see about getting it tuned.please tell me that a tune will wake my car up!!
thanks guys
any help is appreciated.
charles

Yeah, you just need a tune. The air/fuel ratio is probably throwed off quite a bit. Once that is done, I'de say you'll need additional practice to adjust to the new power you're making up top.

Yeah, general consonance a tune would help for sure. I will be getting a tune on my pretty soon, and I am sure that will squeeze a little more out of it at the top end. Good luck, and if you get dyno'd soon, make sure you post the difference pre and post tune.

Somehow I doubt you were trapping 98MPH on a NPI motor. There is no way it would even be close. My car trapped 96.50 when stockish(shifted at 5800-6K though :nonono: ). You should be happy. But yea, you need a tune, most likly your running lean due to the increased airflow of the heads/intake. You will see a difference.

when i shifted at 5800-6000 i was seeing 95-96.
when i shifted at 5000 it bumped me up to 98.2.
do i have to post the time slip
anyway,i was gonna get the car tuned monday, but i got a good deal on some 275-40-17 nitto drag radials,so i bought them.
do you guys think a street tune would be good or what??
thanks for the input guys.
by the way i'm goin to the track again tomorrow night,so i'll post results as well!!

Shifting sooner will generaly give you a higher mph trap speed, but will generaly reduce your overall trap time. Least thats been my observation. As for the tune, go with Superchips tuning. They are the best. Contact the guys at Modular Depot. They'll help set you up for the tune since they're in buisness with SCT.

You don't need a tune.

Re-gap the plugs to .035 that will solve your problem.
are you serious?
will regapping my plugs help out any?
anyways,i went back to the track last night.it was a ****ty track cuz i was stilling getting a 2.1 60ft with drag adials, and they werent spinning no more than 3ft.
i'm setting an apointment with a place to get a dyno tune on my car using a mustang dynameter dyno.
i hope and pray that this peps my car up to what its suppose to be.

You don't need a tune after a PI swap. I have never had a problem with power or fuel when I did mine. That goes for a ton of others in here. Start gappin :nice: make sure your plugs aren't platinum because you can't gap plats.

so what causes it to need such a small gap?
i mean stock is 0.52-0.56 right
i bought a set of ngk TR55's and gapped them to .35.i'm gonna throw them in tomorrow and see what happens.
i added you to my aol buddylist,so when do you normally get on?
i just found it hard to believe that the car not running as well as it should would have anything to do with the gap of the spark plugs.i mean it doesn't miss or anything.
hit me up when you can!
charles

DONT GAP THEM AT 35! Thats ONLY on a S/C motor. They need to be gapped at around 55. You have more than enough fire to make it spark at 55. EDIT: since you have a pretty nice CR, so you might want to gap them at 50-52.

hey rick.
when we go back to the track,we'll throw em on ya car and see what they do.
i'm so pissed about this whole ordeal.i know you could tell the other night :bang:
i'm getting steve from shreve automotive in kenner to dyno tune my car.you wanna ride with me up there,as i don't know my way around over that way.
it'll be on wendesday the 27th that i go!
so i shouldn't try the gapped plugs at .35?
i knew that sounded kinda odd but o-well.

The only thing I can figure is that the air/fuel is lean and robbing HP. If you are mad I should be pissed. I'm thinking we should be pretty close and you are killing me in ET and MPH. Just remember is so damn hot right now. Your times before your mods was in cool temps...Once the weather gets better you can count on another 2-3 tenths.

How much are they charging for the tune?

steve is charging $550 for a switchchip and the tune.xcal2 will be $75 more.
yea i think we are both pissed.i loved that last race where i had to play catch up :rlaugh: maybe when we stick the drag radials on your car you will pick up.i got a deal on some longtubes with x pipe,so i may jump on it.or i may wait and just get new longtubes and a prochamber.tried to call ya on sat,but ya never answered :nonono: hit me up when you get a chance.i go back offshore tuesday, well depending on the weather.
