polishing q

i need to repolish my valve covers to get out the water stains and finger prints. they're pretty rough looking but not hardly scratched or anything.

i need suggestions on what type of compounds and wheels to use.

also where can i get this stuff at?

If that's all you need to do you might be able to get away with white rouge only. If not, tripoli followed by white rouge will do the trick. That way might be easier as tripoli is a more coarse compound and will work on the water spots and dullness more quickly.

You can get either/both at Sears or online at places such as eastwoodco.om or wttool.com or caswellplating.com. Tons of others as well, but those are the places I know off hand.

For tripoli, use a ventilated flap wheel. For white rouge, a loose sewn wheel that is just held together in the center near the shank hole and kinda 'flops' around.

i do have one more question though. do you use a bench mounted unit, or a hand drill or air drill? also can i pick up the wheels at sears also?

I use a hand drill but you can use a bench motor just the same. Air stuff will work too I'd imagine, never saw an arbor setup for it though...

Yes you can get the wheels there too.
