That's right boys and girls! I saw this guy cruise in the local 1/8 mile and I was on it like white on rice! I talked with him and he had a TechArt exhaust and a K&N drop-in, and a short shift kit. It is a 2002 996 420HP car so I really don't know what it had with the mods but the owner thought 435 or so to my 390-400 crank.

Let me start by saying that is was hot as hell. 110 heat index at 5pm and on the ride home at 10:30pm it was still 89 degrees. Humidity was 1000% or at least felt like it. I had the car cooling for 45 minutes and iced a few things!

The first run was me getting the holeshot by 1 1/2 cars and he made up a 1/2 but I was a car in front at the finish.

The 2nd run was a closer launch but his gear lever popped out of 1st and he just quit. He told me that he wanted to run a few to get use to the short-shift then we would run again later. Cool Time to cool the car and ice a few do-dads!

I chilled for an hour or so (coolent temp was 179 for the last run) and then I found him and we ran the last time. By that time the track was packed and the announcer was pumping the crowd up on our race. We lined them up and we were off! I got the launch by a car and when he hit his 2nd gear he pulled a 1/2 car closer but when he shifted to 3rd his pull slowed and we crossed the finish with his nose at my right rear quarter panal!!!

What was the best thing about the races is that he was talking smack about blowing a GTO away on the street a week prior.

Not tonight buddy! I was the better driver for sure! If this was the 1/4 mile it may have been different but even with as hot and humid as it was tonight and being on street tires I stilled managed an 8.6 at 84. He was 8.7s tonight. Luckly heat soak was getting him more then me! My buddy in his A4 WS6 was 9.0s-9.1s (usually 8.6s) and a new 05GT with tune and intake was the same as the WS6. Too damn hot!!!! I was 2-3/10s off the usual time at this track.

I do have video!!! I do need to figure out how to get the VHS-C onto the computer. A computer geek friend says he can convert it so as soon as I have it you will see it!!!

Well, to have a REAL race we have to travel 2:30 hours. The local 1/8th is 20 minutes away. There is no doubt I out drove him tonight. The 2002 996 Turbo driven by a professional driver is a 12.4-12.5 1/4 car. With my new mods I should be 12.8s, maybe a little faster (I'll see in Sept). The thing is, I can drive those numbers, this 996 owner cannot. I know what those cars can do since I'm a national certified Porsche racing instructor. I've been racing for a few years!

Cheers

Hey Doc!! Can you put up a few pics of the GTO? I wanna see what a 996 killer looks like, which is made by Pontiac..

I am curious if you have done something visually to the car, that could change my attitude about its appearance..

I know how beautiful a 996 is.. Perhaps you have done something to the GTO that is sobering.. Thanks..

Also, I think the 1/8 mile run is alittle mis-leading.. The world has grown accustomed to performance measured in the 1/4 mile.. 1/8 mile is not enough to get the turbo spooled up tight on the 996..

But pics please Sir, I need pics!! Dont teaz me! LOL!

I'm sure I out drove him. He may have past me in the 1/4 and beyond but for now, I'm the winner and he was not to happy!

Looks sweet Doc!! Actually looks pretty damn good.. Not like the previous photos I have seen on the car.. Looks good..!! So my opinion has changed somewhat with your pics.

Couple the look of that car, with 400 factory HP, and I am now convinced Ford is worthless for only giving the GT 300HP.. There is no excuse.. Some may take issue with what I am saying, but the GTO looks sweet, and comes with 400HP.. One would have to be a nut not to even consider the GTO based on looks.. Only family loyalty would make one buy a GT over the GTO.. Granted the GT looks better IMHO.. But the GTO looks sweet.. It is definatley not as ugly as people are saying it is..

I now understand this whole thing about the GTO's now.. Call the car ugly, to discourage would be Mustang owners from considering it, if factory performance is truley your underlying motivation..

That's about the best looking GTO I've seen. Like a lot of guys on here, I'm not a big GTO fan, but yours sure looks good! Did you have to mod it much? Lower it, different tires, etc? Anyway, good kill, man!

Thanks. I changed out the wheels/tires, suspension, Aussie tail lights, and a spoiler delete for the visual mods.

So the front end on your car came from the factory like that? You added the wheels, or those are factory?

Also, if you dont mind, can you post a pic or a link to your car, as it looks from the factory for comparison? Thanks..

I got it!

Nice kill Doc! Rule #1 - Know your competition and I wouldn't try to even touch that GTO with a Stock S/C Cobra!

Do the GTOs come standard with an automatic?
