Ok, got me a pro 5.0 the other day. Didn't quite get install right, took two hours (couldn't find a 5/16" wrench, had to improvise) didn't get front two inner bolts (theres like no way you can get them back in w/o pullin console) and heres my problems. I've had to drive with 2 and 4th due to 1st, 3rd, and 5th locking out on me, I adjusted stops, worked for a bit, done it again. It makes a terrible grinding noise, pops out of place, and repeats. I don't know what is going on with this shifter. I set stops like it said, had to give it slack because it wouldn't go into gear, and especially the popping out of gear. I also get a rattling noise, but IDK if thats from the inner boot being loose or not. Anyone got any cures for this problem, is it down in shifter? If so please let me know before we tighten inner front boots down.

Overall, I'm disappointed in my pro 5.0. Easier to manuever then stock, but is way notchier, and for the problems I have now.... :notnice:

Is it possible that you lost that little plastic piece when you pulled out your old shifter? There should be a plastic piece in the tranny where the ball of the shifter goes is. If you lost that, then putting it all the way in gear with the shifter will still allow it to move around some since the shifter ball is not tightly secure. This could be causing the tranny to come out of gear, because it may not have ever really been in gear correctly.

Yes those bolts for the boot are hard to get at, but this should not cause any problems. Possibly that bit of vibration that you hear, but you also have to remember that you are going from the stock shifter which had a rubber isolator in between the shifter and the handle, to metal on metal contact with the Pro 5.0. These things could be something you might want to look at. I am not positive though.

I never had any trouble with my shifter. I love it, the way it shifts, how short it is, the whole thing. I think you will enjoy it too once you figure out what is wrong with it.

Before you can honestly give the shifter the :notnice: , you need to get the front bolts in. It sounds like you need to get the install right. My hurst can be installed/removed with the console left in place. Try notching the front of the console a bit.

I think he means the bolts holding the inner boot down, not the shifter base. I'll put money on the bushing being missing - probably still on the stock shifter......

This thing....... http://secure.50resto.com/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=1683&Category_ID=950 It goes on the ball on the end of the shift arm.

I'll bet it's either this bushing or the stops are not set correctly. Sometimes the bushing comes out with the stock shifter and other times it will stay in the tranny. I'm not assuming anything about what you know or don't know about installing this but here goes....
To set the stops you:
1. back the stop out all the way
2. put the shifter in 3rd
3. screw the stop in till it touches the handle then back it out by a hair
4. put the shifter in 2nd
5. repeat #3
6. make sure the shifter goes into gear 1-5 and reverse
7. test drive it before you put the boots back on in case you have to make adjustments.

Thanks matt, I gave the stops a lot of slack and it helped (knocks on wood, hasn't happened yet) but it will probably happen again. That bushing definitely isn't on the shifter (need to check floorboard) but it's time to rip it back apart :(. I will use your process to set the stops, makes more sense the the crap instructions they have.

Is there anyway I can get 1st, 3rd and 5th back if need be? Any tips on the front two bolts (even went to last resort, trimmage.)

It is not hurting hte tranny btw w/o that damper is it? Just makin me look stupid?

Overall, I am actually impressed with the shifter, I was just p-o'd about having to cruise in 2nd and 4th, and looking like an idiot. Only two things I hate about the shifter is the short handle (which I'm gonna get a triax handle) and the crap instructions.

Appreciate the help. :D

agreed, however if the front 2 shifter base-plate bolts aren't tight you definitely need to do that. once everything is done right i think you'll love your pro5.0

Once the stops are set correctly you should be able to shift into all gears. If the stops don't allow enough movement you can lock yourself out of gears (possibly 1st and 3rd) or not allow the tranny to go all the way into gear hence your grinding sound. If you don't have the bushing in place it is probably allowing your shifter to move around and pop out of gear or partially out of gear. Check for the bushing on your stock shifter (the part of the shifter that fits into the tranny). If it's not there it may still be in the tranny.

As far as the front 2 inner boot (rubber boot) bolts. You have 2 options: Take your console apart or notch the console in front. Regardless of which you choose I would go to the tool store and buy a ratcheting box end wrench that fits those bolts. It will make getting those little beotches :bang: back in heaps easier. I know from experience. :D

Well I did some notching, I guess I'm going to have to get a ratcheting box end wrench lol. I guess I will order a damper and just go ahead and replace it. I also assume that it isn't really hurting the tranny or anything w/o the damper. :D
