Problem filling up after new gas tank installed

I took my '05 in to have the gas tank replaced under the TSB. The dealer filled the new tank 1/2 way and said it filled fine. When I got to my local station to fill it up completely, same thing as before: it cuts off unless you fill it very slowly. Turning the handle sideways or upside down no longer works nor does pulling the nozzle part way out. Has anyone else replaced their tank and still have a problem? Any suggestions other than trade the car on an '06? I usually don't let the tank get below 1/2 empty, but one time I took it down to the warning light came on and I had no problem filling it up, but this was at an out of the way station I usually don't use. They swore they used the correct replacement called for on the TSB.

short answer: it is a common occurance

long answer: use the search function. this topic has been covered probably 50 times--i am not exaggeratting

i've replaced many of those tanks, without a comeback yet for slow fill. as long as they used the correct gas tank replacement, there is a newer part number, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever.

have you tried filling up somewhere else? maybe it's just the gas station's equipment that you're filling at now.

if it still does it, I would take it back and have them look it over again.

Just wanted to subscribe, and also mention I have a 1-05 build GT that has the slow-fill 'feature" and have not had it swapped yet (waiting to see).

Problem with new gas tank

Thanks for the replies; yes I did search the forum and had read all the threads before I posted; I mainly was hoping a Ford tech would respond and he did (thanks Edbert). At first they said they had located a tank at a nearby dealer, but it was the wrong one so they ordered mine from Kansas City. I even handed them the TSB and advised them to make sure it was indeed the replacement and not just the same tank. As you say, I will try another station or so and if it still acts up, have them do it again. I love my '05 and have had "Stangs for years, but I'm just frustrated with all the issues so far including the Skipper 500 , a piece of door trim that wasn't properly attached, etc. I know every new or redesigned car can have first year problems and I just wish I had been more patient and waited.

skipper 500, i'll have to remember that one next time i get one that acts up.

When I got mine done, either the first or second fill afterwards, the tank filled up to 1/2, then acted like it was full. Unlike the original issue, where you could get a buck or two in before it would cut off, then have to start again, it wouldn't take ANY gas at all. I took a breath and got into the car and decided I'd wait to see what happened next time I went to fill 'er up. Never had another issue with it since (roughly 2 months). Hopefully your's will work out, too.

In order to maintain the balance, however, my Sh1tter 500 has manifested new issues in addition to the original skip/spit problems. So that's nice.

that's kinda odd. on the tanks, the only design change is in the filler neck opening itself. I've laid the old one and new one side by side and compared. It seems that in the old tanks the short neck where the filler hose attaches to the tank, has some sort of restrictor bushing driven into it, reducing the inside diameter of the neck. The new tanks do not have this bushing.

Why they put it in there in the first place nobody knows, If I had taken a pic you'd see, it reduces the inlet size a lot.

My '06 has this problem, so don't be fueled by thinking that the new models are fixed.

Same problem with my 05!! You can fix the problem by locating gas stations that work with your car. I use a local hess station and can fill her up full speed with no shutoff problems Theres also an Exon station a little farther away that gives me full speed. Anywhere else and I get the shutoff problem and slow fill What sucks is when I go on trips and don't know what to expect when I pull up for gas. Decided not to have the tank replaced, don't want them screwing with my car and besides I've seen other posts where the problem wasn't fixed.

Trouble filling new gas tank

Thanks; that's what I did. Found a Chevron station not too far away and with tank already 1/2 full it filled up fast and even cut off when full as it should.
