i have put a fresh 9.5 to 1 306 with afr 165s, victor jr intake and an edelbrock 750 carb into my 95 gt. when i go to start it, the starter will somewhat turn the motor over, but it sounds like the bendix does not engage the flywheel right. the starter spins but it sounds like it is just spinning and not meshing with the flywheel. the starter is brand new but sounds just like my old one did. any ideas on what could cause this? it is a 50 oz sfi flywheel 157 tooth. does the 95 gt use a different flywheel? i thought all 302 stangs used the 157 50 oz from 84-95?

other than that, the tranny is extremely difficult to get into gear (t5). i put a new king cobra clutch in, and cant think of where i could mess that up, but dont undrstand why it doesnt want to go into gear right.

and on top of that, the ebrock carb doesnt appear to be squirting any fuel. there is fuel reaching the carb, but i cannot see or smell any fuel squirting into the motor. i bought the carb used, but was told it was functional.

i am new to the whole carburetion world, so i excepted a bit of a learning curve, but i am about to push this car off a cliff if i cant get it running soon.

ANY HELP WOULD BE FOREVER BE APPRECIATED! thanks-ryan

You might want to try your stock starter if you still have it... It sounds like the stater gear isn't engaging the flywheel to crank your car.

If you still have your stocker, this would be an easy way to elimiate this potential cause.

about the lack of fuel-are you running a mechanical fp or electric, if it's mech, then it needs the engine to turn over before fuel will pour into the bowls...

as for the starter, the only thing i could think of is that it may be for a 164 tooth wheel instead of your 157...but, like srothfuss mentioned try your old one and see if you get the same result

If the starter isn't engaging than this is where your problem is. You can return your new starter (if it's covered under warranty) for a different one.

I am pretty sure that the tooth count for a manual trans flywheel is 157.

If you need to get the car running you could pushstart it...

Have you had this car running before in this configuration or is the engine and trans new to this car? How is your fuel system configured, what type of pump etc.?

The starter should be the same weather you have a T5, AOD, 157 or 164 tooth flywheel. The blockplate/bellhousing posistion the starter is a slightly different posistion depending on the flywheel but the starters are the same.

Check your engine grounds! Make sure you have a ground strap from the engine to the firewall as well as one from the engine to the block and I usually have one from the battery to the frame somewhere also. I know it sounds weird but if you dont have adiquite ground, the starter will look for a ground in weird places and will cause what your experiencing as well as melted wires and just generally letting the smoke out of ****.

the motor is brand new, but the trans is the factory 95 t5. its a 306 with afr 165s. the fuel system consists of a holley blue, and an edelbrock carb. im going to try an additional groundstrap like suggested now knowing that the starter would be teh same for both. the starter will turn the motor over, but it is slow cranking and the starter sounds like it is spinning a lot faster than the motor is. it sounds sickening and even if it were starting the car, i would worry about the noise its making. i may take this starter up to the parts store to make sure it is a good one (its remanufactured) and it is a lifetime unit so an exchange wont be a problem

ok tried an additional ground and still makes the same noise. i dont have a chance to get the starter tested today, any other suggestions to get this thing cranking right?

i need my car running again asap!

Yeah, well, I connected my ministarter backwards when I first fired my 'Famous' T5/HO Crown Vic, and it wouldn't crank when I turned the key.

It WOULD crank when the clutch arm contacted the floorpan, even though I had no neutral switch. And it spun backwards, so the bendix didn't work and it freewheeled. Double check those connections.

You have to make sure the teeth of the starter and the flywheel are meshing properly. You may have to get under the car and somehow observe the action while someone cranks it over. Also, check the main power cable that runs from the solenoid to the starter. Mine corroded inside the casing so much that it only had 8 volts at the starter
