Project "1000hp TURBO COBRA"

As some of you know I bought a 1994 cobra last year to start the project car I have wanted to build for a while now. I picked it up as a complete roller with no interior. I have started to gut it out and work on it when I can but when you own a house there never seems to be enough time or money to work or spend on the projects anymore. Anyways here is some pics of the day I picked it up and some progress I have made on it so far.

So far the plans for the car include custom 4 link rear suspension with narrowed 9 inch ford rear axle. 15x3 1/2 front wheels and 15x14 rear wheels, I am probably going to cut out most of the floor and do a custom tube frame and put in as much of the floor as I can when I get done with it. The car is going to maintain almost all of the factory interior minus the back seat for the mini tubs that are going in. I am planning on putting on twin t76mm turbos on either a stroked 351w or 460 base motor. I havent decided yet. Anyways here is the only part I currently have a picture of right now. Its the 10 point mild steel roll cage for the car. I have a set of racing bucket seats and a few other misc. parts for the car as of right now but nothing major. Hopefully now I can get working on it again.

obviously cage will have to be certified. looks like youre makin some progress since last time though.
what happened to the red, white and blue car?

Yeah I sold the wheels off the car once I got it. I was going to buy some other wheels but now I regret selling the wheels. Oh well. I still got the red white and blue one. Right now it is getting a makeover and has been for a year :notnice:. I took out the 347 stroker and procharger to make room for a 351w stroker and bigger procharger. Then I decided I didn't want to hack up my first car to strengthen the body which is why I got the cobra. I am currently transplanting 03-04 cobra IRS in the car as well as SLP loudmouth 2 for the irs. I got a 4.6 I will be putting in it with cams and a 150 shot of nitrous and I have full bolt ons for it as well. Hoping to have it done in a couple months. I will update the thread when I get a little extra time.

Well I didn't make any progress on the car this weekend but did manage to locate a healthy number of parts that I am picking up for the car tonight. Pics will be up tomorrow but here is a list of the parts.

QA1 Tubular control arms
Caster camber plates
Strange 10 way adjustable front coilovers
Aerospace Front disc brakes with braided lines
Flaming river Manual steering rack with joint
Stroud racing 5 point quick release harness
Centerline Convo Pro 15x14 wheels
31x16.50x15 hoosier quick time pro tires.

That concludes the list thus far. I will have pics of all up tomorrow.

I'd rethink 3.5 inch front wheels.
Considering you are going to have 1000hp on tap, you need not save any weight.
That and if i were you i'd prefer to have the most rubber on the pavement as possible for stopping.

You can go just as fast on 17's and 18's these days.
It's a cobra, put cobra wheels back on it.
If you want massive rubber out back, have some cobra wheels widened.

For the engine bay, it all depends on how much work you want or are willing to do.
Filling all the holes is a MF'er, takes alot of time and energy.
Might be easier to scuff and rattle can it. Believe it or not it can come out pretty good if you take your time.
Or have your paint shop paint it.

Ok the point of wider tires for better stopping isn't a bad thing to point out and completely agree. That being said I already have the tires for the 15x3.5 setup. As far as driveability of the 3.5 wheels and tires up front I really don't see that being an issue.

As far as the cobra wheels are concerned I would like to. I would love to put some 03 anniversary wheels on the car to keep some sort of cobra wheels on it but I don't know of anyone that makes a 16.50 tire for a 17 or 18 inch wheel. I do like the drag look to with the 15's it just makes it look mean. Here is kind of a pic of what the car should look like when finished.

While i do like how that car in the pic looks, this sounds like an extremely expensive project to build based around looks alone.

I'm not really understanding the purpose of this build if you aren't going to race it often, especially sinces it's got cost 50 grand and up to build that car.

Im really not doing it based on looks alone. It wont have the extended front clip like what is in the pictures. Its going to have most all interior. It will have all factory body panels including glass. So far with my figures I will be around 6-8k on chassis including rearend and front end with cage and frame supports. I will have about 2k in a good transmission and about 10k in the engine and about 5-8k in turbo kits depending on if i buy them new or used. So about 25-30k on my car isn't really that bad considering its going to have 1000hp.

I think you need to recheck that budget. I know guys with 1000+hp, and the engine with turbo's is going to set you back over 2/3's of that amount.
The shortblock alone should be about 6 grand, then you have $2000 heads, god only knows what jesel or similar rockers are going to cost, lets not forget the engine management and the fuel setup.

What trans are you running for 2 grand with a converter?

I know what it's like to blow past a budget, so if i were you i'd plan on spending alot more 25k-30k.

yeaaa, that car is going to soak up a ton of money. the goals are very ambitious, but you forgot a fuel system, engine management and all of the little odds and ends that add up very quickly. It will be cool, dont get me wrong, but its gonna be big bucks.

That is just a planned budget. I know how projects go. You start out with what you want in mind. You decide to change to a different or better setup that costs a little more. Then you forget all those little odds and ends for the car. I know it will be higher than 30k but its just a starting point. Im not on any time constraints for this project or budget constraints yet. When I get the extra money to spend on the car I will otherwise I will spend time in fabrication on the car. I just plan on taking it slow on the project. I want this car to be done right so if it costs extra so be it. Thats what Im going to do.
Im in no hurry so when it gets done, it gets done. I will just keep updating and keep a running total on what is spent on the car so I can see how close or how far off I am. Im sure it will be more.:nice: No big deal.
