Pros/Cons to running a high volume oil pump compared to a stock oil pump?

Im using a stock volume/pressure melling oil pump in my 466. I didn't see the need for the HV pump. I limit the revs to 6000 rpms and the motor has tight clearances. The not sucking the pan dry myth surprised me, i was told that by so many people.

In my car, if i give it WOT for a second, the oil pressure goes up to ~ 60psi, when i let off, the pressure goes down to ~ 20psi for like half a second then back up to 40psi. Is this normal?

I just purchased one of these. Have not received it yet but I think it is going to be a nice pump.

What Melling doesn't say is that for the vast majority of engines that DON'T need a HV pump --- the HV pump wastes HP to needlessly circulate oil through the pump's bypass. 90GT and 408 hit it -- if you don't have larger clearances which REQUIRE more volume to keep pressure up, use the stock pump. Selection of the correct pump goes hand in hand with working with your machinist regarding the engine's clearances.

i always had bad experience with melling pumps when the car goes hot the oil press goes down the pump i like and the pressure is alwais up is Federal mogul pump!

I agree with Michael, 90GT, and 408.

Stick with the stock pump David.
