Pulleys: Steeda, March, Slp

All 3 are non piggy back and have a SFI aproved dampner but are they different in size? Is one brands crank, alt. or wp. pulley smaller or bigger then the other? If this is the case then maybe this is why some people claim to have made gains and others have not.
 
The dampers are all different materials and durometers too, so they have different dampening characteristics for the harmonics. What this means to you is each one makes your engine wear differently.

Using anything but Steeda or SHM can lead to 70k rebuilds (worst case, but I've seen it).
 
Stock dampener is better than any of the above mentioned...even steedas.

Get the March piggy back pulleys...they are only $130ish and you get to keep your stock ballancer. I have them and ZERO problems, they even went on the crank without issue. I love em :D . And use RTV sealant in the grooved key passage as directed or it may leak engine oil.

That's actually horrible completely incorrect advice.

In stock form this would be true. When you piggyback the crank pulleys though, you increase the dampers weight significantly and move the damper farther forward. This results in greater wear on the engine.
 
You might get a couple hp higher up, like at 6k or so. Like someone else said, every little bit helps. I mainly did it because I'm running 4.10's and always turning more rpms than normal. When on the highway, I'm turning about 2800 rpms at 75 mph.

:bs: You apparently never installed piggy back styles before. The only possable increased wear would be on the front main bearing....and the force of say a supercharger (tight belt) would HEAVILY HEAVILY HEAVILY wear it more than a few more #s on the crank. :rolleyes:

Steedas and the others dampener is smaller, and doesnt remove the vibrations as effectivly as the stock one....ill take a SUPER slightly more worn front bearing than more vibration going through my rotating assylembly @ 6200RPMs. There have been many engine failures reported (I did some looking into this crap before I decided which kit to get...PB or new ballancer) on engines with aftermarket UD pulley/crank dampeners.
Steedas will not reduce harmonics as well as the stock one, but its reported to be the best on the aftermarket...and isnt much worse than stock.

Dont ask where I accumulated this info from as its been a while...but thats why I didnt put an aftermarket dampener on my car that sees more RPM than the adverage 2V. If you MUST get an aftermarket dampner, get steedas.

EDIT: have you seen the GT-500 motor? It has a setup simular to the piggy back style I have...huge dampener/pulley pushed out for the drive accessoris, and a pulley behind it turning the S/C. Its the same thing as what I did...and I doubt Ford would do that if it had any ill effect.
 
+1 for what mustang331 says... I also did quite a bit of research before installing mine. I too had heard all the horror stories about the piggyback style, but after researching it they turned out to be more of an "Urban Legend" than anything. I have been running the March Piggyback style for years now with absolutely Zero problems.
 
I did the Steeda pullies after years of telling others not to. Anyway, I'm glad I did.. my gas mileage has improved and that new crank pulley looks 500 times better than the old brown rust colored stock one did.

I used my air compressor quite a bit. Easy installation if you follow directions well, and if you rent the pulley removal tool from Autozone.
