I am going to try and pull my engine and transmission out of my '91 5.0. This is the first time I am doing anything like this so I am going slow. This is what I have done so far. I removed the gas tank, exhaust up to and including the headers, the A/C compressor, power steering pump, smog pump, water pump, alternator, belt tensioner, and most of the intake manifold. I also disconnected the shift linkage from the automatic transmission. I think the only things I have left are the four bolts on the motor mounts and the two on the transmission that hold it to the cross brace. I also have to disconnect the speedo cable still. Other than that is there anything I am missing? Should I just hook up the engine crane and disconnect the motor mount and transmission bolts and just start to hoist it out?

Oh, I also drained the oil out of the engine but not out of the transmission yet. I am thinking about doing that but with there being no plug on the transmission I need to get a bigger catch basin before attempting it and making a mess.

depends which bolts you do/can get at. theres 2 that connect the mount to the block and one that connects the mount to the k member.

your on the right track, when you start to pull it, go slow cause there is always something that you forget to lossen or take off. pulling a motor in a fox is as easy as it gets. i did one in my buddies camaro and that was alot more work for some reason

Yea, I definatly see two bolts down there, I figured I would disconnect them both. Any tricks with the transmission? I guess just unbolt it from the crossbrace and then unbolt the crossbrase altogether right?

Take it slow and watch for any wires you may have forgotten...not a difficult job at all...and if you didn't already, don't forget the O2 sensors and the grounds if connected to the back of the engine by the firewall.

ya thats the easiest way, make sure you have to front end up in the air quite abit to take the tranny and engine out together

i always used a leveler when i pull engine and tranny at the same time. i jack the back end of the car as high as i can. just be sure to know where all the wires get plugged back into. it is kinda simple. just mark em with tape if your not sure.

dude, you've done way, way, WAY more work than what's needed. First of all, gas tank does NOT need to come out unless you're replacing something in it like the fuel pump. Second, pull the driveshaft, and h pipe, mufflers and tips can stay. pull the driveshaft. Disconnect the lines and linkage to the trans, and any electrical connectors. Next, one bolt on each side of the trans x member, and the two nuts in the center of the trans x member, yank all those.

Undo the motor mount bolts. Headers can stay on the car (from the factory there are hooks there to attach a tow strap or chain. I use a tow strap with hooks, it'll hold it. all that other crap you pulled can stay. no need to take off ANY accessories, or the intake. you WILL need to pull the radiator and fan/shroud, disconnect the lines from the p/s pump, the fuel injection lines from the rails, empty the oil, and use a 1" wrench to turn out the oil level sender in the side of the oil pan. next, unbolt one bolt on each side, front of the block. You'll see them,as they are the ones that hold the starter cable to the block (guides it). Disconnect the alternator wiring, and vaccuum wires, and any other wires that physically connect to the block, as well as the throttle cables.

that's it, pull her out. This is your first time, but 75% of what you took off didn't need to come off.

also, lose all the fluids before you pull anything, trust me.

Thanks for the advise. The reason I took all that off was b/c I am going to be replacing most things anyway. I am not sure if I am going to rebuild this engine or put a crate engine in so I took the accessories off for the heck of it. As far as the gas tank goes, I took it off b/c I think I am going to do a fuel cell on this car. The engine did come out by the way with no problem. Check out the pictures:
