I have the chance to buy a 429 out of a 68 t-bird and was wondering if I could run it with a C4 tranny or had to get a C6. Also, what gears for the rearend should I run. I am not planning to mod this motor much so pretty much stock power. And will I have to get a 9" rear to handle the power or will a 8" be sufficient. Not looking to build a real racer but will take it to the track once in a while. Mainly just to drive around a little and take it to the strip occasionally. Also, any other tips that will be helpful in making the swap would be appreciated. Thanks.

if your c4 is from a small block then the bellhousing will not be right.

there is another member here who has or had a 460 in a 67 fastback. (thumper460 i think)

I can remember him saying that it was not really worth it. no room, custom headers, etc.

I guess it depends on what year of car you have.

There's more than one who have a 429-460 in 67-70's here, 67GTA429 is another ( I may have gotten his screen name wrong here, so .......... You will need the C6 from the 429 as hungrymonkey said. You will also need to be on the lookout for a 9" rear too, the 8 may last a little while, but eventually the 429 will eat it. You will also need to beef up the front end to handle the extra weight. A brake upgrade will alos be in order, you DO want it to stop , don't you?

Brakes are over-rated Hearne. If something is in the way...TURN!! or use the big "OH CRAP" button and deploy a drag chute.

A 429 in a 67 is a PITA. There is not much room, but it is do-able. Supposedly Crites makes a set of bolt on headers and special motor mounts, I do not know how they work since I still have exhaust manifolds and those barley clear the steering box and master cylinder.

Give more info of what you are thinking of putting the engine in, and you will get better help.

I plan on putting it in my 68 mustang. I just went and looked at the 429 and he will take $250 for the engine and C6 tranny. The engine is missing the exhaust manifolds, carb, cam, timing chain, spark plugs and wires. Is this a good deal. He said the engine ran fine when he pulled out of his other car about a year ago. The crank still turns freely. Looks in pretty good shape. The tranny is also in good cond. not missing anything. What do you guys think? Should I ask if he'll take less or is that a good price?
Oh, and do I really need to get a new oil pan specially for the swap?

Well those C8VE heads could net you what you paid for it, so I can't see any harm in the purchase price. Crank ought to be worth at least a 100 too. A Cleveland would be an easier swap and look just as sexy nestled between the fenders

I agree with Hearne. The heads alone are worth it.

You should plan on rebuilding at least the top end of the motor if not the whole thing.
