Question about an older dyno

This is probably a terrible time to ask this question, but I never had it answered in the past. My car has moved beyond this point as far as the mods on it, but I have a question concerning an old dyno I had done on my car about 3 years ago. It was prior to my cam and compression work...so ignore the numbers in my signature for now.

I had the car dyno'd right after JBA installed a 75mm Throttle Body and their popular shorty headers. From what I remember...here are the mods I had on at the time:

-K&N Kit (you know the one)
-T/b
-Catted X Pipe
-Catback
-Headers
-U/D Pullies
-Timing Adjuster
-Simple dyno tune

The dyno came out to be 271 rwhp and 323 rwtq. The rwhp made sense to me, but from the numbers I've seen on other mustangs 323rwtq is something you get after massive upgrades, such as the cams. Is it weird or abnormal to have this high of a number on torque with a comparably low number of mods? After the cam and compression upgrade...along with gears and clutch work....I have the number posted below in my sig. The torque STILL seems high to me (and the second dyno wasn't done by JBA).

Thoughts?

JBA's dyno has been known to be rather interesting in how it calculates their numbers. Local rumor is that their dyno is on "shootout mode"... There's really no explanation for their numbers, as on one occasion I've seen a very stock car dyno higher than the stock flywheel numbers.

Where was the 2nd dyno performed at?

For reference, my 98 Cobra with full exhaust put out about 295 rwtq, so that 323 sounds rather fishy to me.

Seeing as you've gone there, I'm assuming you're in the San Diego area, and if so, we've got a couple dynos locally that may be closer to reality if you'd like to go to them.

The 2nd dyno I had done up where I live now in Irvine by just a local tune shop. Star Performance Auto is their name, but I doubt they are famous for anything or are a chain.

I showed them the dyno from JBA and they said that in comparison to the mods the gain makes sense, but they still don't, like me, understand why the torque is so high.

I would understand JBA's dyno being off...but because a second comparison showed similar high numbers, I'm wondering if there's something in my car that is maybe overworking or doing something it shouldn't. I dunno, I'm not very savvy on the dyno tech stuff....

I don't live in San Diego anymore...and I don't really want to go to a third shop to have them pull it and show me the same numbers. I just wanna know if there is, or could possible be, some kind of explanation for this.

Also I should note that they did do a pull prior to doing a minor tune (which involved the timing adjuster mainly) and the numbers were slightly lower, but I don't remember the exact digits. I'd guesstimate they were lower by about 7-8 hp/tq

Is your Boss 281 based off of a 03-04 Mach 1 motor? Because now that I'm thinking about it, I've seen some people put down 306/331 rather lightly modded (full exhaust/CAI), and figuring in another 25-30 from a set of cams, and another couple from TB and UDP wouldn't make your numbers all that unbelievable either.

Nope, just the normal GT 2v motor. The Boss 281 thing is to distinguish it on the racetrack as a road racing car as opposed to a drag car, and from other GTs.

I dunno, I'm just kinda scared cuz I've heard both positive and negative stories about high torque numbers. I've heard that some mustangs come out of the factory with more HP and TQ than normal just by fluke....but I've heard some other friends with cars that have way too high of output (not on a mustang though, it was a corvette)...and the engine ended up blowing after about 65k miles.

Dynos are just for tuning and you can't compared the numbers between one dyno and another. To me, dyno numbers are just a crap shoot and anything+/- 50hp/tq could show up. The only use is bragging and if you use the same dyno every time, you can see a difference in power. My 88 only put down 306 rwhp, but it ran 12.26, full weight (~3100lbs).

So...I just shouldn't care? I just want to know that my car isn't gonna blow up.

Well, weird dyno numbers or not, your car isn't going to blow up as long as your A/F numbers are pretty solid across the board, most importantly at higher RPMs, and you don't hear a rattling at high rpms, you should be fine. That, and just keeping an eye out for the other basics like having enough oil, coolant, etc, etc...
