Question about jacking the car up to work on the rear end

Ok...so lately I ran into a thread that described the fact that you shouldn't raise the entire rear end of the car with a floor jack from the pumpkin. I have always done it that way. If you aren't supposed to jack it up from there...where am I supposed to jack the rear end up from in order to get it high enough to get both jack stands under the rear jacking points? It seems like the pumpkin is the only place to lift from that would get the entire rear high enough to get the jack stands positioned. Just curious  I'm installing my MM LCA's this weekend so I figured I would ask :nice:

Maybe my jack stands are just really tall because I can't imagine putting one side of my car up on the jack stand and leaving one off for a second. They are almost a foot and a half tall each. Maybe it would work

Ok Kilgore, I understand, but here is an even dumber question. If the jack is taking up the space where I would put the jackstand (jacking point), where would I put the jackstand to support the rear of the car? I usually put them at the jacking points (which I won't be able to if the floor jack is in the way).

You can jack on the axle on either side of the pumpkin ... Put one jack stand on the opposite side that you are jacking, then move the jack to the side where you just put the stand and jack beside the stand (its tight, yep), put the stand under the other side and you're done.

I hope that makes sense.

That is how I did it on my GT. On the Cobra I jack it on the pumpkin but I feel guilty about it every time... :(

jacking the pumpkin on a cobra shouldnt hurt it, unless its a straight axle... ive lifted my car up by the pumpkin since ive owned it, and just about every weekend its up on jackstands while i'm tinkering on it.. when i got my axle done he welded the axle tubes into the pumpkin and he said that it fit right in the jig so it didnt bend it in the 3 years ive had it...

Yeah, it is supposed to be safe to jack on the pumpkin with IRS according to the information I have found. Best to have an IRS diff brace though... I will be installing one soon.
