how much of a power difference would it make to put a set of AFR165 heads with a 58cc chamber on a stock motor. I plan of building a 331 or 347 stroker in the future but kinda wants the heads now. Also one more what is the stock cc on a stock head on a 92 5.0L.

i would say the 185's would be better for you. I know that with your current engine they wouldnt be as useful as say the 165's, but since you are going to stroke your 302 to a sturdy 347 or watever, the 185's would be much more capable of the handling the added air and fuel.

my big thing is the cc size. i want to go natural power rather than nos or super. the 185s have a 64 cc chamber where the 165s have a 58cc. that makes a big difference in compression ratio as you probably know.

Depending on how soon your doing the 347...here is what I would do...

I would get the AFR 165's with the 58cc (stud mounted)...and when time comes either port the heck out of them or sell those AFR's (have a good resale value)...and step up to 185's...

Now with the 185's you would need to notch the pistons on your 302...and probably wouldn't be worth doing that when your going to have it all torn down or replaced soon or eventually...

how much of a power difference would it make now? I plan on repainting the car first.

What else is done to your car now? There will be a definate power increase but not optimal because the factory induction (MAF, TB, Intake) won't be able to feed the heads very well. The stock lower flows only 130cfm per runner. Even if you upgrade that it's going to be difficult to push it all out the stock exaust.

I noticed a night and day difference but I did the 165s, intake, cam, injectors, fuel pump, 75mm Pro-M, 65mm TB, long tubes all at once.

I really didn't want to notch the pistons and I kinda felt like the 2.02 valves were a little big anyways. The piston to valve clearance was four thousandths away from the minimum tolerance on the intake side, had a lot of room on the exhaust side.

These guys are right though... The 185's would be better for the 331/347. But you can do like the other guy said and get the 165s for now and sell them and upgrade to 185s later. But if you do just heads and keep the stock intake, cam, etc, you won't see a phenominal increase in performance. It'll kinda be like a shop vac trying to suck though a drinking straw.

Just an estimate here...but I would say you might get 20-25rwhp with the heads alone...

well, I have 165's on a stock roller 302.. headers, 1.7 rockers and a home port matched performer 4v intake.. runs pretty good..

the 165 and 185 are the same casting, you could always have AFR re-CNC them to the 185 specs.. or just have them ported..
