Guys, I know there's been countless threads on this subject, but I can't find the answer to a specific question.

My car is using lots of oil still. Like a quart+ in 200 or so miles. The tube from the oil filler to the TB is wet with oil, and there was oil in the upper intake when I put new gaskets on. Car doesn't smoke and runs like a scalded mule in heat on a hot July day with a carrot hanging in front of him drenched in salt.

The catchcans that you guys are running...I've read people's posts that say it really helps their oil consumption. My question is, does it help oil consumption because you dump the oil from the can back into the car, or does it actually cause the car to quit using (or sucking) as much oil? What I mean is, to benefit from the can and have less oil consumption, I assume I'll have to dump it back into the engine, correct?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, if you run a catch can you will have to dump the oil back into the motor. It's more or less a bandaid fix.

a restrictor might be a more livable thing to try.

good luck.

Yea, I thought about that...doesn't that go in the tube from the oil filler to the TB with a 1/8" hole in it? Doesn't this cause too much pressure to build in the crankcase and blow out the rear seal though? I just replaced the seal a couple of months ago and don't wanna do it again!

Also, if that air is metered, wouldn't a restrictor screw that up? I've read the threads where guys have used a restrictor, but I'm unsure if any of these questions have come up.

I've read your oil problem threads also...ever get them solved? I know I'm looking at a rebuild, but the thing runs great, doesn't smoke unless you really romp on it and I just can't afford it!

I'm having a similar problem and tried all of the following: restrictor, needle valve, moving the pcv valve to a valve cover, and a catch can. I finally just bypassed all of it and ran breathers. This did stop the oil consumption from the pcv valve, but I still had an oil problem. After a leakdown test and compression test my motor checked out fine....

My problems are valve seals riding the valve and possibly bad valve guides(might of even aided to the pcv system consuming oil).

I suggest doing a leakdown test and compression test. If you can't do that, try and run breathers. This will eliminate oil consumption by the pcv system. If you're still burning oil after this, then you're either in the same boat as me or your rings are bad. Hope this helps.

*if you run breathers, on the oil filler neck and on the pcv valve spot. Don't forget to cap off the vacuum lines so no unmetered air will enter.

People have plumbed the restrictors up in different locations - depends upon how much you burn and what your set up is. I am not sure how much restriction would create issues because it depends upon how much blowby one has. Don is the one to ask IMHO (very detail-oriented guy - he has pics of his restrictor set up on his site, as i recall). He would be a better source of info than I (I have not done a restrictor on an EFI 302).

I was not aware I had oil control issues. Tell me more about what I had said and I will try to clear that up. I am planning on running a catch can just because it is something I want to do because I like doing things for the sake of doing them - but not because I burn a lot of oil or anything, per se.
