"Race fuel" in a 5.0 ???

Hello everyone,
I'm heading over to maple grove speedway after work. There is a local gas station that sells VP race fuel. Would i see any gains by running some of this through my car. I was thinking about running half a tank of 93 then put in 2 or 3 gallons of the VP race fuel. Am I just wasting money or will i see any type of gain. I also have no desire to screw up my engine. Any info you guys have will be greatly appreciated. Racing starts at 5-10 so stop on by!

Waste of money. I don't even know why you bother with the 93 octane.

This was discussed in another thread a few days back. You will want to run the lowest octane rating you can without pinging at WOT. Higher octane will actually reduce your performance.

If you have a stock motor 87 will be just fine, although older motors with a lot of deposits in the combustion chamber, or a fouled up MAF, may need a higher octane to keep from pinging.

Unless you're planning on advancing your timing, the higher octane fuel will do nothing except drain you of $$.

Race fuel is just REALLY high octane. You have no need for it, its meant for race engines with intense compression.

115 octane knocked .2 tenths of a second off my quarter mile time.

Spun more off the line and on the 1 2 shift.

You can feel it in the seat of the pants.

I had totally 115 octane in the tank.


I was running 87 before. I have no cats and a Vortech supercharger on that car.

I wouldn't recommend anything higher than what you can get at the regular gas station pumps unless you DON'T have cats. I have burned up two cats on one car, and one cat on another car running 115 in one and 100LL Avgas on the other.

And that tells ya that you arent really even burning it all. I have a motto with buying mustangs AND gas. STAY BETWEEN 87 and 93!!! j/k but yeah don't get race gas. If you have aftermarket heads they usually suggest high octance levels. What's the middle 91? 89?

Depends on where you live. 91 octane is premium for me, 89 is mid-grade
