rear drum removal

My little German Capri II is real bad about the drums seizing to the hub (as I was recently reminded when I had to put new wheel cylinders on it). I soak it with PB Blaster around the hub and if I'm sure the brake shoes are backed off enough I break out my large 2-jaw gear puller and crank it down while I tap it with a hammer. Putting anti-seize on it around the hub when re-installing is a good idea !

The access hole is on the lower backside of the backing plate.
It's oval so pry out the plug and shine a light in and look,there is a toothed wheel inside.
Take a flat screwdriver and turn it (direction I forget,been a few yrs since I did drums) till it's real good and loose.It can even fall out of position,doesn't really matter as long as it's good and loose.
I give a few good taps on the sides of the drum to try and move it a lil front to back,hopefully knocking the pas inwards some.
Now try to pull the drums off,usually I could just by hand,but if not grab that BFH.

Once you go to put it back together and don't know where that adjuster goes,look at the brake pad.....errrrr shoe ( see it's been awhile,I'm try'n to call shoes pads lol ) at the bottom there will be a slot in the shape of [ on the front piece and ] on the rear that adjuster ( --l- ) fits between them like this [ --l- ]

Whatever you do do not get grease or oils on your new pads....errrrr shoes well actually ether or the inside of the drum .

ok found the ports, adjusted all the way out, then had my way with the drums with a bfh. finally off. when I removed the passenger side a few things fell out on to the ground. here is my thread on sefb for pics.

but now I am trying to put things back together does it match what is on the opposite side or do I need to flip flop things? also was reading my hanes manual and it says the parking brake portion attaches to the big pad but when I removed mine it was on the small one? what is correct? maybe the book and whoever did the last brake job on my car put things on incorrectly and thats why most of it was broken.

When you install the brake shoes, remember: short shoe goes towards the front of the car.

^ ya figured that out after I read my haynes manual, imagine that, there is stuff that tells me how to do things in a book, WITH PICTURES! forgot I had it until I was looking for a tool and saw it in the coner under the dust.

PS took 1 1/2 days to figure out, DS took 10 minutes.
