Rear end bad?

long story short, a year ago i blew out my rear end from the work a shop did, so they replaced it with a 87 thunderbird axle with 3.73 gears.......possosibly..........well today i took the cover off the rear end and i was going to go down and buy the clutch pack rebuild kit, well i took the cover off and there was no clutch pack, and when i held one tire and moved the other a little bit the two gears that i would say are the medium size...(not sure what to call them) moved and then i rocked the one tire back and forth, those two gears looked like they were going to fall out but theres a little shaft holding them there. basicly it looks like the bearings that are suppose to hold them in place where destroyed.

How much play is suppose to be in the gears?

SOunds like they need some adjusting.....the small spinder gears should be tight against them and riding smoothly on the pin.

theres nothing smooth about the small gears riding on the pin. its looks like theres about .03 play from the pin to the inside of the gear.

There should be no play. Sounds like the spider gears themselves are shot. Thats the risk of installing a used rearend. I had the same experience when I swapped my 7.5 for a used 8.8. don't mess around trying to find new spyder gears like I did. Buy a new diff and be done with it. You'll save money in the long run.

i know about the buy new stuff deal, im going with new 3.73, cuz i dont think these were treated right, and 5 lug conversion and either detriot or trac lock differental.

The backlash by speck is .009-.015 I think, so you shoot for .012. Yes I would take it back see if they stand behind it.
