REAR GEAR ?

Just want to know what will be a good gear to put in. My GT is pretty much stock. Also about how much are they. This a daily driver. To and from work about 50 miles a day, and I drive it like a Mustang should be driven. I'm concerned about the rpm's on the interstate or should I not even concern myself with that.??????

My preference is 3.55's, since I also drive about 50 miles a day.

Here's a chart, it uses the stock tire size.

What's stock? Gosh I feel like a noob with that question.
So we figure about $300.00-$400.00 for them installed.

I'm not sure if they make gears for a mustang...

j/k

stock is 2.73, and ford offered an optional 3.08 for 5 speeds.

3.08's were standard for automatics i think.

I love my 3.55's, but I also do quite a bit of highway driving. I think they are a good compromise.

Btw, do a search on gears in the 5.0 forums. There have been a lot of threads about gears, since they are so popular for the mustang.

Stock gears can be pretty much anything. I have a factory rear end out of a 90 mustang in my car the tag info on the diff and the rear axle code on the door say it was a 3.73 gear car from factory. so not all 5 spd mustangs came with 2.73's 3.08. you can look up the code on your car to find out what it has right now providing no one has already swapped out the gears.

Shoot, we argue this all the time. What I have noticed in my heavy convertible is that the gas mileage stayed the same (or went up a hair) and I drive all over on the highways and backroads with my car.

Small differences between the 3.55 and 3.73's so you should do some thinking on what gear YOU want to run.

I love mine though!

i'd figure out what gears you have in it already and decide from there. if you have 2.73's, going to a 3.55 you'll notice a pretty decent difference, and if you do alot of interstate driving their ideal.

if you have 3.08's, you'll notice less of a diff going to 3.55's......might want to consider 3.73's.....depending on how much you drive on the highway......the 3.73's ara about as much as you want or need to go in a daily driver.....

now you can figure out your cruise rpm at 60 mph, but who drives 60 on the interstate?? probably should figure your cruise rpm for 70, which is what most people drive.....i have 3,73's, they arent bad at all, but i'd probably go with 3.55's if i did alot of highway driving and only had 2.73's to begin with.......

3:55's worked great for me

I went from the stock 2:73's ( ugh ) to 3:55's, and it really woke the car up. third gear is way long now and the car is all around more fun to drive. i am tempted to try the 3:73's, since most people say they don't cost you that much in mileage. either way, you can do some downright heinous burnouts with the 3:55's.

I would go with 3.73's.
I drove 3506 miles non stop(with a co-driver) in my stocker when I had 3.73's... averaged just over 24mpg with cruise control set anywhere between 80-120mph.
Cruising at 55-60 I have knocked down 29mpg... but usually got 26mpg on the highway at 70-75.

I have 4.10's now and love them, but, don't drive 50 interstate miles a day.

I have an 90 auto GT and went with 3.73's. They really woke up the car. I had the posi clutches replaced in the rear end with Ford Motorsport ones and the bearings and seals replaced too. Along with the gears it was like about $575 with tax. I felt it was all WELL worth it.
