received my thumper heads today.

yeah but to do aluminum heads you would need to buy special pushrods to match,a pushrod length checker tool, rockers and all that other junk to just use the heads right. that is why i did this since all stock parts are reused.

There is no argument that most aftermarket alumimum heads are a league over Thumper E7's, but while going into that league your also making things more complicated. Thumper heads are a bolt on, bolt off mod, while most aftermarket heads, your looking at lots of "misc." items and headaches. IMO, with a stock bottom end, Thumper's are probally one of the best ways to go.

AFR 165's, TFS TW's aren't tha great when compared to AFR 205-225's or TFS R's or highports. The Stock block is a waste of machine work when compared to a Dart or World block. It's all in how much you want to spend.

Just cuirious but why not just GT40P's? You can take an Explorer motor and throw a cam and roller rockers on it and run 12.90s all day long. I'm sure you can find GT40s for what you'd pay for Thumpers (no offense to Thumper or anything....but think about it...why doesn't he just port GT40Ps and make that much more power?).

he does at a higher cost. i don't feel like getting different headers. i am not looking for the most power anyway. just something to run better than e6 heads.

Hell better than E6s....either E5s or E7s. E6s are possibly the worst heads ever on a 5.0.

1.7RRs, TFS track heat, 65mm tb, 15 degrees timing, and 40psi of fuel pressure. With a totaly stock set up at 15 degrees advanced with BBK headers, off road h-pipe and magnaflow catback it put down 220rwhp. Now it puts down 261. I had it dynoed at 10 degrees timing and the fuel at 44psi and it put down 247, then at the current setup and got 261.

I posted this along time ago about my gt40 head exp.

as far as price goes.

gt40 heads used 400$, .550 lift springs, valve job, mill, tank, flux was another 500-550$ so yes that is 900-950$ for STOCK gt40s that were basicly freshend up as after I had a head gasket issue after I first put them on (bad gasket no install, hardware, other part failure issue) and wanted to make sure things were good with them. The machine work was done about a year after I first bought them and about 2-3 months after first install. Now it is very realistic to get the heads checked and new springs to get them fresh so I think that is/was a smart move. Yes I could have bought a used set of alum. heads but would have still prob. spent the money to get them "fresh" so that price of the work would be added to the price of those used alum. heads as well.

If you think about that thumper e7's are not bad at all since he does the checking and freshening up and port work.

Yeah i'm not at all knocking his work, i'm just saying it's kinda like polishing a turd. I guess we country folk just do things a little differently, like pull GT40Ps off a fire damaged engine, bolt'em straight onto a block and run 12.90s on slicks. BUT, that doesnt mean it isn't smarter/better/neater/albeit more expensive to go the route you went. When i think about buying used heads, i think about the absolute cheapest way i can go to make power...if i saw any chance of spending 1k on heads, i'd go the extra mile and get aluminum. 900-950 can just about get Edelbrocks, and they'll outflow GT40s all day long. Again....just to make clear...i've talked to Thumper a billion times and i admire what he does, but "I" wouldn't start with E7s to make power.

gt40's are just e7's with bigger valves, aren't they. for 700, i got nice springs, full rebuild, performance valve job, and nice work done. sounds like a deal to me. it's a piece together motor and these heads were given to me from the machine shop a few years ago after giving them some truck heads. they gave me these and i didn't find out until a few years later.

No, far from it. They have updated combustion chambers and spark plug angles which promote a more efficient combustion in the cylinder. You can't just port E7s and get GT40s. Again, it kinda feels like everyone's taking defense to what i said....that's not what i'm saying. I'm not knocking his work on the heads...i was even looking into buying them myself at one time untill a friend of mine started running 12s on Explorer motors. It's not like that's the holy grail of performance either, but for me it's the cheapest way for me to get going fast and cheap. My comparison between GT40ps and E7s is like...why build a 347 stroker when you can start with a 351 block and stroke it to a 426? There are definately pros and cons on that just like everyone is giving about the head topic...but for me, starting with a better product and ending up with more in the long run is the way i'd rather go.

Pay particular attention to post #28 from Ed Curtis.

Geez no kidding...i hope i'm not looking like a Thumper basher or something? I simply said why doesn't he start with a better head? Truth be told, i've never "had Thumper's product in my hands" so i'm only going by what i know...that i myself can score a set of GT40Ps for about 3-400 bucks, and as long as they're mechanically sound (i wouldn't buy'em otherwise) i just bolt them on and go...no extra cleaning up or machining necessary....add a good cam and roller rockers and if the rest of your car is up to par, you're in the 12s. Grant it, not everyone will see those kinds of ETs, but they are possible.
