removing cig lighter

i am in the process of cleaning and painting my interior. i need to remove the lighter w/o breaking it. so i can paint around the inside of the ashtray. i don't wanna break it. anybody got a clue as to how to remove it?

Usually the easiest way to remove the lighter is to stick a finger inside the socket and spin it loose from the outside shell. You won't be able to spin the outside shell due to the plastic tab on the trim that keeps it from turning.
