Removing 1964 steering gear box

I was having a some play in the steering wheel so i decided to take it out and get it rebuilt. So I started to remove the gear box out of by car but ran into some issues.

I removed my headman header and the pitman arm, the column nut and slid the column out after removing the turn signal connecters but not all the way out.

So my question is does the column have to come all the way out to clear the shaft straight down and remove the gearbox? lost!

Remove the steering wheel, column, and driver's seat. Remove the LH cowl brace, LH valve cover, and #7 and #8 spark plugs. Remove the pitman arm. Remove the gearbox, by maneuvering it up and over the LH head. If you have a six cylinder, this is way easy, of course.
