Hey do u remove the cable from underneath the car. I am taking the whole rear out of the car and putting it into another, so i figure it would be easier if I just remove the cable from the handle, instead the of the rear. Any help would be great. Thanks

are you staying drum brakes? if you are, just pull the swedged end out of the shoe, and compress the little tangs together and pull them from the backing plate

if your converting to discs, you'll need to remove the whole thing which entails the first part, and doing the same thing with the part of the cable that attaches to a fixture directly up and inboard of your mufflers, then they run up to a "splitter" directly under your ebrake handle...

also if your swapping to rear disc, you'll have to modify your ebrake handle, or swap one in from a 79-86 (manually adjustable) or possibly one out of an SN95

to tag along with the disc conversion, you'd also have to get different cables (M-2809A (2ea) and M-2810 fwd section)...I personally used SVO type (same thing as the part numbers above) cables from the local Advance Auto...same thing, and about $20 cheaper per pair.

No im staying drum brakes. I want to keep the cables connected to the rear, i just want to disconnect it from the handle. Is this possible? Or do i have to disconnect it from the rear.

oh yeah, very possible, just release your ebrake, pry them loose from the splitter up behind the driveshaft, then follow the cables down to the quadrants, push all the little tangs down, and pull it through the hole-it can be a PITA, but just have some patience, and they'll come off fairly easily

i ended up using hose clamps on the e-brake cables thanks to a suggestion on here.

with the hose clamp in place, i tapped it a few times with a rubber mallet, it got them through after trying everything else.

That was probably me that offered that suggestion as I tried everything under the sun before putting the hose clamp on and they came right out after that!

yeah i think it was you. i still went through hell before that.

i took the cables off at the e-brake handle above the driveshaft. then i used a dremel to cut them off right before the fitting, and still ended up needing to remove them.

i had tried pliers, vice-grips, everything and they wouldnt come out. so i put the hose clamp on one more time and smashed that damn thing and it flew out.

in my case though they were not going back on, so you might want to be a little more careful

I slid a box end wrench over them to release them to come out of the hole

I tried that, along with a socket, tie wraps, everything you can think of, I was about to cut the damn tangs off and then seen those little hose clamps up on my bench and said what the hell I tried everything else!

wat i didt was yank on the cables, as if i were removing them. then with a long screw driver (flat, skinny) i flattened each tang that holds it in, very easy and quick.
