Replace Emergency Brake Handle

This is most puzzling. I could have sworn that my handle was in the horizontal position when I lay on my back in the drivers foot well and Dremelled plastic material from around the old pin, which was pointing down, in order for me to be able to pull it out. I'll see if I've got the old handle.

Hi,

Did you disconnect the cable, if you did then the tension would be gone and the pin would then be in the "off" position or handel in the vertical location now at 6.00 and midnight.

I just had a look at mine, i think the is original and in the horisontal location (9.00 & 3.00 oclock) with the cable tension on.

Steve

The cable is disconnected. I'll try reconnecting it, but I'll swear that the pin was in the 6 o'clock position when I removed it. Unfortunately I've trashed the old handle. I may have an under dash photo though, I'll check the archive.

I managed to find the steel inner stiffener from the old handle. The attached photo shows the original pin location versus the replacement one. What the devil is going on here?

That does look like a nice handle.

When you said billet I was thinking polished aluminum etc. I really do not want any of that.

I really prefer to keep the OEM style handle, but if it breaks again I may consider getting one like yours from CPRstreetmachines.com. I don't see any products on their website. How much was it?

I don't understand why the reproduction ones do not have the metal inside them.

Talk to the guys at CPRstreetmachines.com if you want to get a really slick billit one. I bought one from them, top quality part.

Check my earlier post.

That does seem weird.

The parking brake handle on my 65 has the pin in the 3 oclock position.

Are you sure that the shaft hasn't rotated?

EDIT

I guess it did start off in the 9 oclock position. Is your car a 64.5? Maybe they changed it at some point.

I checked several Mustang parts houses and didn't see any other handle listed. I don't know why yours is different.

That is very odd Geordie. My guess is the handle assembly you have in your car is from a different year/model Ford that got swapped in at some point, but that is just a guess. I suggest you simply drill a hole in the new handle to align with your assembly and be done with it.
