Replacing Ignition Lock Cylinder

HEy guyz, I was just wondering if you can get a new ignition cylinder lock that is keyed with your door locks so you can still use one key for everything? My friend snapped a key in my current cylinder (car starts fine but I cant remove key remnants from the cylinder) and the ears are sloppy anyways causing constant chiming when the door is open etc, so I wanted to replace it anyways.Again, I'd like to have one key operate all locks if possible, like stock.

ALSO, On rockauto.com there are 4 different ford part numbers and 4 key codes listed with the lock cylinders. Why is this...possibly because a certain key code matches certain door lock cylinders? Can anyone shed some light on this? Heres the 4 part numbers and descriptions from rock auto:

Ewww. I'd call your local locksmith and ask him. You will need to call around for rekeying prices anyhow. The last time I had it done it was about 15 bucks to have the new lock made to work with my old key (so one key does all, like you want). Anyhow, the locksmith will be able to look up what you need.

I'd have said maybe the dealer could check by VIN but you'd have to know the locks are what came on the car from the factory or I think that would all be off.

The new lock cylinder will fix the dinging issue and the ears. The ears are held on with 3 pins that are prone to shearing off. When the ears are loose, the keys get bent or break because the ears are supposed to take the burden of twisting. There's a small notch on the ears which is indexed with the chime contact when the key is turned to 'off'. This makes the dinger go off (removing ground). Otherwise the contact grounds through the ears' ring and makes noise. Because your ears are not indexed anymore, the chime makes noise. I pulled mine apart and made new pins but it was kind of a PITA. I should order a new Lock myself.

Anyhow, none of that helps much but...........

I replaced mine on my car. I just went to the ford place and they got a new set that replaced all the locks and keys for the entire car. I think it was about $100 for the ignition, both doors, trunk, and glove box. It was pretty easy to change them too.

ford place?....you mean the dealer? So anyone have any ideas why there are 4 part numbers?

you know what the hell...I use my keyless entry to get into car anyways so I will still "only be using 1 key" but I will have to carry 2 on my keychain, incase my battery dies or something. No biggie.....
But why 4 part numbers? Still wanna have that answered.

The thing is that because you want to know what the deal is with the 4 keys, you'll get the correct lock, which means for an extra 20 bucks or less, you can have one key that works everything.

Fopar, you turn the key to 'run' and push the retention pin upwards while pulling the lock cylinder out.

I'm in the same boat , my ear part sheared off completely..
I wonder if the locksmith could replace the metal ear part...

Else I will have to order a new cynlider and get it keyed..

DJice, I doubt it. The ears are super-duper pot metal. There's a channel cut into the inside of the ear's outer circumference. This mates with a channel on the lock cylinder itself (so the ears turn but dont fall off). If you go to remove the ears, the channel starts to rip apart, and getting the ears back on without the pot metal breaking off is a PITA. I managed to do it (making new pins was a PITA too) but my advice (after doing it) is to just get a new lock cylinder if it's feasible for someone to do.

Ok...HISSIN...got any ideas on how to figure out what style of key I have? I tried google searching for those number/letters and found nothing...

Ok I found out I gotta go to a dealer to get the key code...I'm gonna check into that tomorrow. I'll also try and call a locksmith to see if I can get the cylinder rekeyed for my current one...I'll post back with results or possibly more questions. Hopefully not the latter.

Ok my local dealer says they cant get me the key code because the car is too old. Also, the local lock smith wants $35 to rekey the properly coded lock...I, think I'm just gonna suck it up and carry around 2 keys.

I had to do this about 4 years ago, and the dealer just matched up my key to the correct style, then matched the tumbler bumps to make up a new key that opens the doors and works with the new ignition cylinder. My original key was pretty worn, so the doors can be a bit iffy (you have to wiggle the key sometimes), but they did the matching for free I just paid for a switch. I think it was less than $50, but it's been a while. Just general info, the first 4 and the 6th run the ignition I believe, and the 5th and 7-10th bumps run the ignition. I might have those backwards, but that's the idea behind it according to the dealer I got mine from.

what if you don't have the original key?

If you don't have a means of correctly turning the ignition lock, you'd have to pretend you're stealing your own car and punch the lock.

Or if your lock cylinder is still viable (if you had a key), a locksmith should be able to make a key for it. This can be pricey, especially if he has to come to the car, etc.

Well, I ordered an Acode lock set cuz my dealer said it was most common. WHen I get it I will see If I can re key it. If so then its nice to have that option on the table. If not...oh well.

Unfortunately my dealer isnt as nice as yours divit250r....They want $75 for an A code cylinder (all they keep in stock) and told me to find a locksmith.

maybe six months ago or so, hissin50 walked me through replacing my ignition cylinder... its scarry how easy it is. It kind of makes me want to go to ford and buy another 60 dollar cylinder then walk around until i find an unlocked 5.0...

then wah lah

Pretend to steal the car. There are a couple of methods of doing it but all involve mangling the cylinder. I'm really unimpressed with the quality of the lock cylinders on these cars.

I tried to replace mine so I can have only one key for the car, But it won't come out. I pushed in the pin underneath and had the key turned a bit and nothing happened?? Do you have to force it out or something?? It doesn't just slide out.

Vic, did you actually turn the lock all the way to 'run'? If it's not there, the pin can't be pushed in.
If it still wont work, try wiggling the lock back and forth (just shy of 'run' and just past) while pushing lightly on the pin. It might decide to go for ya.
