if you could please do this for me, it could help me diagnose my problem. I know my voltage regulator has failed but i think i can repair it. i only need this information.

please check the resistance between the positive terminal on the 3G and the casing. mine reads 5k Ohms. if everyone could tell me what theirs is i could repair my regulator, thanks.

PS. disconnect the battery + cable from the alt when testing for continuity. thanks!!! :flag:

Ok here are pictures of my voltage regulator, i need to have my car running by monday so i dont have time to order stuff, i need to fix this.

the unit looks ok, it doesnt look burned. here is some info.

the 3 prongs in that socket in the above picture, i tested each prong for continuity.

starting with the prong to the left and the positive lead touching it, negative lead touching metal plate (casing). it shows 6k Ohms.

middle prong with pos lead touching it and neg lead touching case, shows 1.4k ohms.

rightmost prong pos lead touching it, neg lead to case. showing 6k ohms.

now to test with the neg lead on the prongs and pos lead on the case (to see if the diode is functioning).

leftmost prong test shows no continuity.

middle - still 1.4k ohms

rightmost - about 6k ohms.

when i reversed the leads i know that the diode is supposed to verify its existance by showing no continuity. i dont know on which prong or on all of them, if anyone is an alternator guru, please respond with your knowledge.

I will be very grateful, if you need more info just reply and i will gather more info. thanks guys. :hail2:

Question:

Can the voltage regulators of foxbody 5.0 alternators be interchanged with the 96 alternators? They look identical.

also, i have a 3G. When the people ask which kind i have should i just say 96? Because they dont know what a 3G is. I just want to make sure my alternator wont be fried with a voltage regulator from a different year (could be interchangable though). someone please help me out on this.

what kind of alt do you have? is it from a place like PA or from another ford (parts store or J/Y)? I probably cant help much, but that info would probably be needed for those that can.

good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

this alternator is a LOAD BOSS 150 amp unit i bought on ebay, its a superb unit that functioned nicely. the load boss company does indeed exist and they have a main web page and a with a toll free number that i called a couple times, so i dont think its the alternator itself that fried, again my electric fan relay shorted all kinds of **** out which probably caused this...

what would happen if i drove my car tomorrow with the alternator having a bad regulator?

it gets too hot to touch if i drive the car for more than 15 minutes, as if current is passing through it on a large scale. but in the car i can clearly see the voltage go up when i floor it, so i know the alt is pumping fine. i just need to get to work tomorrow.

so i ask for a 130 amp alternator regulator for a 96 mustang? i need to know tonite, thanks again guys. :nice:

Letting you know that i saw your newest posts - I dont know but will bump ya.

good luck.

BTW, driving with unregulated current can fry lots of things (lights being the first and easiest to replace). I would REALLY try not to drive it like that.

good luck bud.
