I have been thinking of a new project; a 1970 notch back. The one I am looking at is a rolling chassis.
Most of the steering is missing. What would be involved in putting in the whole steering system from the rack & pinion to steering wheel from a 2005 or newer Mustang? Is it even possible?
Anything is possible with enough money.
But why reinvent the wheel? There so many decent suspension systems available for that car that are already engineered .
2blue2 is right. if you really want rack and pinion steering you are going to have to replace the front suspension assuming you want it to work right. you are better off getting a replacement steering box from someone like opentracker or others on this board that do this kind of stuff. the nice thing is its all bolt in easy and relatively cheap compared to rack and pinion steering.
Rack and pinion steering isn't all its cracked up to be...your turning radius will almost always suffer, regardless of the method used to get rack and pinion. The factory steering box is great once it has been rebuilt and you upgrade to things like roller idler arms from OpenTracker or others. There is a guy over on the vintage mustang forums who rebuilds the factory boxes...for that matter, with a little effort you can rebuild it yourself, not everything people to to vintage mustangs is an "upgrade" regardless of whether its sold as such, and retrofitting steering meant for another application is almost certain to end in dissapointment. A factory box will do all you ever need once rebuilt...and if you have to have power steering, adding an under-dash electric power assist unit will get you there. This is like people adding power brakes.....they are almost always unhappy with the results not being what they imagined.
