All you guys, and gals RULE:nice: Thank you all for the help, but I have a very annoying problem. Car will not stay in reverse and almost always grinds going into it. 1st - 5th work perfect, but you have to put all your strength to hold the gear selector in reverse when backing up. God forbid you have to give some throttle to go over a bump or up an incline, it will just pop out.:bang: It is supposed to be a fresh T-5 world class with a Centerforce clutch (not sure which one) and has the ford racing quadrent, stock style cable and a Steeda firewall adjuster and a Hurst short throw. Please any help would be very appreciated.
 
No the transmition does not move or twist. The gear selector is not hitting anything, not even the stops on the short shifter.
 
I've always found that it helps to put it into 5th and THEN into reverse - as I remember it, the reverse gear doesn't have any synchros. Similarly, I've found that it's easier to to into 1st if you put it into 2nd and THEN 1st.

As for why it's popping out of gear, that's a new one on me. If you have an aftermarket shifter, maybe you've got an adjustable stop there that's too far out...?
 
I have had tis probablem in every mustang i have owned. Besides the "pop out". Always a grind. My first 1992 gt 5.0 when it was brand spankin new. My 2003 cobra, my newest addition ( 1993 lx 5.0), and the new tko 600 that i just put into my 93 lx. Doesnt scare me one bit. Like mentioned above. Put it into 5th, then reverse
 
The grind is annoying, put it kicking out or reverse is down right frustating. Of my stick Mustangs I have had -2000 GT ragtop, 1996 Cobra, 93 Coupe- none have ever jumped out of reverse. I wonder if I have a broken gear or bent linkage? This is driving me crazy:bang:

I forgot to mention I also had a 1984 alpha romeo spider that had 50k original miles on it. The damn thing popped out of reverse all the time if you didnt hold it in. It would shake the whole car too when it popped out. It did it since i had it and I kept it for some time before selling it. I just dealt with it and didnt bother me. I know it probably makes you crazy but hey, its only reverse. You dont want to go have that fixed cause its gonna cost you. I vote deal with it.
 
If put into reverse properly it should not grind. Make sure you are not letting the clutch out in neutral before putting it in reverse. I always put it in 1st before reverse, I don't know if it matters which forward gear. While holding the clutch in the whole time, put it in a forward gear, then put it in reverse. I know this is probably obvious, but I just want to make it clear.
 
I think 1st and reverse are on the same shaft....putting the car in 1st before trying reverse is a sure way of getting it into reverse without grinding. I always use first before rev and my beat up old stock T5 never grinds going into reverse. Now the noises its starting to make in 3rd are a different story!!!!!
 
I know how to deal with the grinding, thanks:drool: . If I just hold the clutch in for a few extra seconds it shifts fine. The BIG problem is it holding in reverse. I have a long driveway and I have to use 40-50lbs of pressure to hold it in gear and it still will pop out when I give any throttle to go over the hump in the driveway.
 
Revers dont have a syncro on it, I think revers and 2nd are linked together. The way revers is set up is its just a 3rd gear set up on a shaft. then a lever on the side of the tranny will push it so it joins 2nd gear. When that revers gear is added the tail end of the tranny will spin the other direction. When you take it out of revers a spring will slide the revers gear back to its original position so that it wont interfear with the main and counter shaft. Woo i hope i made sence. You dont have a problem with 2nd gear at all?? or anyothers? You dont feel the syncros make any sort of vibration will shifting gears? Just wondering.
 
Fourth gear sometimes vibrates, but not always. The tranny does not grind except when shifting too fast into third, but I think thats more driver eror. I just have to hold the gear selector really hard to keep it in reverse.:nonono:
