Yeah there is a pic of my cage and a break down of the cost in that first link.

The special rear bars allow the rear seat to be installed as normal, I can snap another pic with the rear seat in there.

I left out the cross bar so the rear seat would actually be usefull, I installed the cage for chassis stiffing and not to withstand a side impact as is what the cross bar's function is.

Here is a couple more shots of my cage with the interior partialy in.

As you can see in number 1 i still need to stretch the headliner on the rear pilars...anyone know how to secure that after stretching it?

The second pic shows the clearance between the rear seat and the main hoop.

The third shot shows the rear strut attachign to the trunk floor / rear sub frame.

I ended up having to move the front seats inboard 1.5 inches each to get everything to fit...there just wasn't enough room. I dont think anyone would notice just glancing at the car.

The master plan for the front struts is for the bend in the bar to head outwards giving you more elbow room....NO way would that happen as the main hoop only leaves about 1/2 inch on each side. I pointed the bend down to tuck the bars farther down and out of the way. I also didnt weld the forward struts as high on the main hoop as was suggested for the same reason.

If I were to do the install over I would have not cut so much off of the main hoop as was reccommended. I think it would look better tucked up almost touching the headliner and my tall friends wouldnt hit their heads on it when they tilt their head back.

67351Coupe, I really like how your main hoop follows the lines of the quarter window and how your rear struts go back near the window and then down through the package tray. I do see what you're saying about the main hoop being too high, though.

I would like a 6 point bar that ran the full length of the roof from the windshield to the rear window, and I'd like all of the bars to be snug against the headliner and to run in the pocket that is formed by the curvature of the roofline on each side above the side windows all the way from front to back. I'd also like a rocker level bar that tied the main hoop to the front struts in the kick panel/under-dash area. I'd want the front and rear struts to go through the rear outermost corners of the package tray and the front outermost corners of the dash along the A-pillars through holes cut with a hole saw. Finally, I'd like cross bracing of the front and rear struts directly above the windshield and the rear window, and I'd mount my sunvisors in the front off of the cross bar. Cover it all in padding and with leather matching the seats.

Does any of the above make sense? The idea is to basically hide the cage from the outside by running it all along the body lines.

Yeah that all makes sense except for the part about the main hoop being too high. I would like it higher.

I plan on covering the bars with material matching the seats.

If you do try to install a cage like you mentioned, do it with an old headliner in place that you dont mind setting on fire....keep a fire extingusher nearby too. I installed my cage without the headliner in, had it been in I would have saw that I would be better if it were higher than it is.

The main problem with these universal kits is you have to cut the hoop and cut the strut rods down some before you can even start trial fitting. The strut kit covers everything from a boat of a dodge down to a pinto. I think I had to cut about a foot and a half off the forward struts just to get them into the car and begin to visualize where I was going with it all.

Good suggestion re the old headliner.

Yeah, I'm sure it would be a hell of a job to get the cage to fit like I want, and I also understand what you're saying about the difficulty of installing the universal kits. Did you have glass in the car when you installed your cage? I suspect it would be easiest with no glass in the vehicle and, of course, with the entire interior removed. At best, however, it would still be a beyatch.

I would think that most everyone wanting a cage would like it to fit like I've described above (if you can follow my long winded, jumbled description), so I wonder why none of the companies any of us on this thread are aware of make a user friendly kit?

Probably don't want to make that kind of investment. An entire kit for 1 specific car.

I had widows out and entire interior out. I would venture to say it would be impossible to do if the windows and full interior was in. At the very least the front seats would need to come out....windows....debateable but I'm glad mine were out.

Although my interior was out I inserted and removed the seat frames several times to line up everything. I'd imagine if you didn't do that you would never get your seats back in.

That is a great design. What you need to do is work one up and get all the dimensions worked out then you could come up here and help me put mine in.

A while back I saw a guy´s mustang site and he had pics of his 4 point roll bar installation in his 66 coupe. The roll bar was just like the one in the pic.
He welded the roll bar to the floor pans, but cool thing was when he installed the rear tubes that weld to the wheel wells (red striped tube). He had his quarter trim installed and used a piece of pvc pipe that was slightly larger than the diameter of the roll bar, so that the pvc would slide over the "short arms" (blue striped tube). He cut the pvc just long enough to come in contact with the quarter trim panel, and marked the circumference of the pvc on the trim panel with a pencil. Took off the pvc pipe and used one of those hole saws that you use with a drill to cut the holes for door knobs in the house. He then took off the trim panels and slid the rear roll bar tubes through them. Bolted the tubes to the roll bar and had someone hold the trim panels while he welded the rear tubes to the wheel well. He ended up with a super sharp looking installation, no need to install boots to cover up the holes there. I´ll see if I can find the link.
