The ones currently on the car are real light, less then 10 lbs. I ordered another pair and they came in yesterday, and these drums have the cooling fins surrounding the outside edge, which makes them come in at a hefty 25 to 30lbs each.

I`m sending one pair of them today to the powdercoating booth, and was wondering if I use the heavier set of drums, am I gonna notice the extra weight sluck to each wheel so to speak on the back.

racing? a 40 lb weight difference sounds like a lot, especially on drums in the rear. are you sure you got the correct ones, and aren't trying to put front drums on the rear? it shouldn't need excessive cooling fins for rear brakes. I would take them back and find the correct ones for the car. 40 lbs of unsprung weight is huge! !

No racing.

It just seemed that all the extra rotating mass would cause performance issues.

I upgraded the rear drum brakes on my 66 to the 10 x 2 1/2 size, these drums are indeed much heavier than the ones that came off. That said, the extra weight brings benefits, the thicker drums and the fins not doubt increase the ability of the drums to dissipate the heat generated.

There is a trade off, it would take multiple consistent drag runs to measure the cost if any of the extra weight. I feel confident that you will feel the difference in stopping power quickly, I did when I installed mine.

I'd be more concerned with the unsprung weight.
