Yes true bolt-ons dont work well with a Carb 302, but bolt-ons are different for carb cars. What bolt on are there Exhaust(Not headers), K&n open element filter, underdrive pullys, and the old screwdrive tune. Everyother mod is a serious mod the changes the physical structure of the motor.

With a carb car when you swap a cam depending on the lift you will only need to change your springs and maybe clay out your pistons. Theres no expensive computer tunes. You could drop a intake manifold maybe even a tunnel-ram for and then throw on a badass Carb which arnt very expensive you can make 15 to 30 hp depending on the car.

The parts arent that much cheaper but theres just not alot your can do cheaply in any motor.

Edit: I know a guy who builts his motors cheap as fudge. He starts off with a stock 350($200) motor that makes HP somewere in the 250 range. He adds a cheap mild cam($100) to the motor. Adds an old edelbroke manifold for like 25$ out a Junk jard, rebuilds himself a Holley dubble-pumper 750($25). The Icing on the cake is the headers which also cost about ($50).

Installation is done by himself in his driveway, extremely fast because its like a 80-something truck. Anyways $400 dollars he run next to me up to about 80 were the winds get the best of him. The oddest thing is he gets better Highway mileage them me. I dont know how that truck gets 22 mpg on the highway, probley because it has like 2.73 gears in it.

See thats Cheap...
