RPM heads, underestimated??

You will need the head bolt bushings if you go with the RPM heads..you can't put them on withou them. The bushings allow the head to be used on either the 351 or the 302...bushings are only 40 if memory serves me correctly...also the rpm heads are not emission component ready. Also I wouldn't use anything but ARP bolts..don't go using your old head bolts...not a good idea.

Actually IF you read the fine print on any if not ALL the head Shootouts.. they all say the Velocity... air speed.. low lift numbers.. cfm under .400 blah.. blah... blah... and you look at the HP ( Posted HP gains) they are ALL with in 10-20 HP !! SOOooo... as stated above.. want a 12 sec car.. 11 sec?? Power adders?? In real life the "brocks will fit right in there!! as well as the GT40s.. but it must be cool to anounce.. AFR's.. or TW... Or Brodix on a daily driver.. to me and a lot of others all it says is 'I have more money to spend!!" Cool?? and the performance of most dual pourpose street/strip cars are not even CLOSE to the potential of the Big Killer heads they are running.. I Know there are a lot of 'Brock headed cars out there, I do more of those heads than any other, and they are some real fast cars... SOOOoo... again, I feel it is a Name game more than a "all I can get out of it " game.. dont you?? Buy the Brocks.. save a buck or two and spend that on tune!! then you'll need to buy a bunch of 1/2 inch wrenches !! Why?? well you'll need to help the high dollar boy bolt back on his doors after to blow them of... cool??

Paul you should listen to this guy..one of the best in our hobby :nice:

Last summer when I was shopping for heads I had narrowed my choices to the Ford Racing Y303 and the Edelbrock Performer. While talking to a tech at Ford Racing he admitted the Edelbrock heads had much better flow numbers then the Ford heads. He told me I would have to have some porting done to the Y303's to equal the Edelbrocks. When I found out that the Performer and RPM heads were the same heads (Performer has EGR port, RPM does not) the choice was easy.

Again the RPM heads require the bushings to work on the 302's available from Edlebrock..but NOT included with the heads. Also note...you really need to go with new or ARP head bolts..I would NOT use the old stock head bolts..and HIGHLY recommend the ARP's...very important in my opinion.

....soooooo, what you're saying is, go with ARP fasteners, lol jk :D

ditto on the ARP hardware, best way to put an engine together IMO. I didn't realize though, that the older head design (that's what I have) have lower flow numbers-they still run like a scalded dog, but in that respect, are the older castings capable of flowing just as much as the new ones with a little work?

For what it's worth I'm doing a tech write-up in co-operation with David Vizard(If you notice he does a lot of tech writing for MM&FFs as well as other magazines) for DragRacingOnline.com as well as possibly MM&FFs. I'll have before and after dyno results, may pics along they way as well as before and after 1/4 mile passes. I'm actually going this friday to get the basline dyno runs and 1/4 mile passes.

One good feature about the heads it they have excellent swirl, meaning when the air enters the combustion chamber it "swirls" around in the combustion chamber better equalizing the air fuel charge within the combustion chamber.

As many others have posted they are right up there with the AFR heads and others.

I'll keep you guys posted on what I find with my car and when the article is up on DragRacingOnline.

Also later this fall we will be testing a few intakes. One is a stock 5.0 intake that makes as much as 20 hp and tq EVERYWHERE in the power band
I know there will be some skeptics here, but it's true.
Stay Tuned. PM me if you have any other questions.

I work in the automotive field as well and frequent with the Edelbrock reps. Edelbrock makes superior American made products and backs them very well. The RPM and Performer heads are great and should flow right there with the best of them in almost every area.

Yea, I got the prices on everything i need, and matched them up w/ Jegs and Summit, and the roller rockers are cheaper (they are crane) and the pushrods are cheaper (ford) and I'm not sure about ARP's headbolts, which I also WILL BE GETTING DMAN!!!!!!! and The head gaskets (i beleive felpro, not sure) are like 70 bucks, and the heads are 1090 from my guy. I bought a cobra intake polished aluminum from him for 480 and the regular is like 380, I bought Hpipe and Headers for 320 combined - and that wasn't bad either - cam was 195 (little steep for E cam) but no shipping lol -

You guys have fully talked me into buying the Edelbrock heads. My friend is very satisfied w/ them, but he has them on his 347 stroker, so I didn't know whether it was just worked well w/ his car or not -

Should i go 1.7 RR's or 1.6's ???
What is easier, i'm always afraid of that clearance w/ valve covers.....
aftermarket ford racing covers

Remember 1.7's effectivly raise the lift of your camshaft (.498" lift with 1.6 ratio)....so beware of piston to valve clearance. Your lift with the 1.7's would be .529" or so.....it SHOULD clear but definitly measure for clearance before you fire the engine.

what the hell does it need head bolt bushings for - if the heads are made for a "302" ford block, than why would it need "adapters" to make it fit, it should just fit - where to they go and why do I need them???
Paul Perreca

Bushings are required because the heads are used on both 351 and 302, they need to be used for the headbolts to be torqued down..hell with all the money you'll end up spending on a new motor and the install, you'll find that 40$$ pretty insignificant. Good luck on the new set up...you'll like it.
