i went out this morning to make a small idle adjustment. i went back out about a half hour later to leave for work. i noticed a small amount of coolant on the floor. i decide to drive to work and about 10 miles into the trip the gauge was on hot. i pulled over in a parking lot and had someone come pick me up. the overflow was full. i figured i would go back later and open the rad cap to see if its dry or not. how can you tell if your water pump is bad? i plan on topping off the rad if neccesary and trying to drive it home with someone following me. as long as i pull over if it goes up to the hot i should be ok right?

the rad is new so i doubt it could be that. the only thing i could think of was the water pump or a clog somewhere is the system. im leaning more towards the water pump but is there a way to tell without taking it off?

You have described what sounds like a thermostat issue. It is stuck closed or only partially open. Usuaually a bad water pump will just leak from the shaft seal if bad

i put a new 180 thero in when the intake went on. maybe 25000 miles the most since then. the person i bought the car from said the water pump was changed recently but it was replaced with a used one. i will take your suggestion into consideration when i get it home but does my plan sound safe. driving it with someone following me and pulling over when/if it get hot.

I suppose so. I doubt it's the pump though. Unless you have suffered from the highly unlikely probability that the water pump impeller has brken from the shaft in which I think you would hear noise. Thermostat is easy quick and easy to change.

i think the only place its dripping from is the little hole in the overflow. the waterpump is definetly not where the coolant was coming from.

fluid boils over into overflow since it cant pass the t-stat. Unless your clutch on fan has taken a dump.
